Will Smith, Steven Spielberg, Nicolas Sparks, Tyler Perry – to these foolproof brands, add one more: the late Dr. Seuss. “The Grinch,” “The Cat in The Hat“ and “Horton Hears a Who” have all grossed over $100 million, and now, opening with stronger numbers than the three of them is “The Lorax.” The environmentally-minded ‘toon, which ironically has helped market SUVs, is the third effort from Illumination Entertainment, and it looks very likely to outgross the openings of both “Despicable Me” and “Hop.” Industry expectations pegged this as a huge opener, as it was a notably deflated market with no animated blockbusters since last winter’s mostly well-received “Puss-In-Boots.” In other words, duh.

It’s been a red meat kinda year at the box office. The number one slot at the box office has been taken over by an R-rated action movie five times thus far, the latest example being hoo-rah Navy SEALs film “Act of Valor”. With constant studio waffling over ratings, mid-budgeted fare like “Contraband” and “Safe House” have still handily trumped PG-13 four-quadrant "alleged" blockbusters like “This Means War” and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” all year long despite the supposed ratings handicap. And those films all had noted stars, familiar leading men and women, while “Act of Valor” is populated entirely by real armed forces.

Good Friday (oops, that was totally accidental), everyone. The Fat Tuesday spirit is now gone, no more flaming skull heads riding motorcyles for us. Nope, it's just Tyler Perry films and fish out of water comedies. They are making us give up Nic Cage for Lent and I just can't stand it. This weekend we have ensemble comedy "Wanderlust," one Mister "Tyler Perry's Good Deeds" and a few other curios and offerings for your cinematic palate.

Review: 'Act Of Valor' Lives Out The Hopeless Nihilism Of The Modern Action Movie

What have you done today? Probably nothing, says “Act Of Valor,” the new military recruitment film from directors 'Mouse' McCoy and Scott Waugh. A title card appears early explaining that the film is "based on real acts of valor,” which is a nice way of saying none of this is true, but it probably happened at some point in spirit, because you can’t snuff the spirit of heroism. Which is why “Act Of Valor” tries to trump all modern action pictures by claiming to be the real deal, down to the marketing-ready gimmick of casting actual Navy SEALs. Feeling inadequate yet?

With the rest of the country often complaining (and often rightfully so) that entertainment is essentially made on two coasts for those living on those two coasts, it'll be interesting to see how Relativity Media's patriotic/jingoistic American counter-terrorism war film "Act Of Valor" performs overall when it hits theaters on February 24, considering it's mostly aimed at (and certainly being marketed to) the middle of the country.

The greatest advertising opportunity of the year aka the Super Bowl, is over, and one highly priced team of players beat another highly priced team of players. But as always, it's the ads everyone is talking about anyway, and this year, Hollywood dropped a bunch of cash hoping to lure football lovers to theaters over the next few months.

First, let's just start off by saying the work that those in the U.S. Navy take on is brave and courageous, and their sacrifice is immeasurable. That being said, turning the efforts of the Navy SEALS into some kind of first-person shooter video game movie does their service to the country a great injustice and plays more like a movie put together by pasting together scenes from "Call of Duty." Though we guess a movie about mid-level grunts would be boring.

Disney, Kathryn Bigelow and Peter Berg, take a seat. You've all been beaten to the punch for a film centering on the Navy SEALs, the defence force division whisked into the global spotlight after taking down the world's most wanted man, Osama Bin Laden.
