While there has been much talk about "Anchorman 2" aka "Anchorman: The Legend Continues," details on the actual plot have seen somewhat vague and only really addressed in a broader sense of the thematic territory that will apparently find Ron Burgundy swimming in a bigger media arena than he was back in San Diego. But could a plot morsel served out pretty early on turn about to be right on the money?

Adam McKay Says 'The Boys' Is Back On At Paramount

Despite a successful run over at Columbia directing "Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby," "Step Brothers" and "The Other Guys," that wasn't enough for Sony to get on board for Adam McKay's adaptation of the comic book "The Boys." The studio axed development on the movie back in February, and it's not entirely difficult to see why. The ultra violent work by Garth Ennis is definitely a major gear change from the comedies McKay is known for, but it appears another studio is throwing their hat in the ring.

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay have long recognized just how funny Rob Riggle is, casting him in their projects like "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby," "Step Brothers" and "The Other Guys." Now, they are rallying behind the actor to give him the lead role he's so long deserved on a pretty amazing sounding comedy project.

This is a project that has been in development so long we figured it was simply never going to happen. First picked up way back in 2002 by Warner Bros. as a starring vehicle for Will Smith, the project has been kicked around for over a decade and David Dobkin ("Wedding Crashers") was long attached to direct. A year ago, there was some fresh movement when "Role Models" scribe Timothy Dowling was brought on to give the script a fresh rewrite, with Denzel Washington now linked to the project. And it was only in March that the writer teased the remake of the 1974 would -- for better or worse -- be in the vein of "The Hangover" in the tone it was aiming for. Hmm...maybe it's going for "The Other Guys" instead?

"We've done about two per cent! Half a per cent? We've got five pages of story notes and chunks of story. We're holing up writing for the next three months," Adam McKay tells Empire about the development of the "Anchorman 2" script. And while there is still a lot of time for things to change, shift and evolve, it's pretty clear that he and Will Ferrell have got a general idea about where the story will go. The good news is that the period setting will remain, the even better news is that we're going to another big gang fight. No word yet if the man on fire will return.

If you're still not stoked about another "Anchorman" movie, this quote from director Adam McKay should fix that: "The funny thing is we re-watched it for the first time in four or five years the other day. I had seen pieces of it on TV. But Will and I actually sat and watched the whole movie. When it was over with, we were like, 'We’ve gotten a lot better than that! [laughs]' "

Curiously absent in last month's surprise announcement of "Anchorman 2" was any mention of the musical angle that was bandied about back in 2010. While the rumor was that Paramount turned initially turned down the project over budget concerns and fears it wouldn't play internationally and would've been cost prohibitive, there is no doubt a star-powered musical sequel -- even with everyone taking pay cuts -- would have been expensive. And while it's not a sure thing that a musical approach has been totally deep-sixed (and we'd guess there will be at least some kind of music nod like "Afternoon Delight" in the first film) all signs point to yes.

If you only looked at the box office numbers, it would appear business is booming in Hollywood. And yet, left and right, projects are being postponed or outright canceled by the studios. Just this week, Legendary Pictures put the kibosh on the latest ill-advised blockbuster, a nine-figure adaptation of "Paradise Lost." And now Sony is pulling an Old Yeller on two more projects, with Columbia Pictures halting an adaptation of the violent comic, "The Boys," and genre shingle Screen Gems passing on kid-lit adaptation "The Mortal Instruments."

Last month, Fox 2000 (a sibling of 20th Century Fox) purchased the spec script "He's Fucking Perfect" from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay production company shingle Gary Sanchez. Penned by newbie scribe Lauryn Kahn, THR reported the story to be about a pessimistic woman in love who uses the Internet to research her friends’ dates, report back and weed out the losers. However, her role gets turned on its head when she encourages a friend to dump a date only so she can steal him for herself, and then uses her social media savvy to transform herself into his ideal girl.
