Pompeii
With a reported budget somewhere in the neighborhood of $80 to $100 million dollars, there is no doubt where the money went in "Pompeii," the ancient Italian city laid to no uncertain waste in Paul W.S. Anderson's film. When you plunk down your $12, you will get the destruction you promised. But it's too bad it's such a repetitive, unengaging, glaringly digital experience and worse than that, you'll have to sit through the disaster that is the rest of movie, a turgid gladiator drama, with acting so wooden, we'd wager that the script co-credited to "Downton Abbey" scribe Julian Fellowes (who we can only imagine saw his draft thoroughly rewritten by the other three writers on this into something more pedestrian) is good for kindling. Lots of things burn in "Pompeii," but nothing resembling drama, tension, excitement or entertainment.

The first "Thor" movie was something of a risk for Marvel. Wisecracking Robert Downey Jr. in a (relatively) grounded real world setting was one thing, but a Viking god from space, played by a complete unknown and directed by a man best known for Shakespeare adaptations was quite another. But the 2011 film, while flawed in many ways, proved surprisingly entertaining and teed up both its title character and his villainous brother Loki for a return appearance in the team-up movie "The Avengers," which turned out to be an absolute megahit. As such, the studio must be feeling on surer ground with "Thor: The Dark World."

“Thor 2: Everyone Was Asgard Fighting” is just a few short weeks away from hitting theaters like an Asgardian mallet to your marketing senses. It’s already screened for press in the U.K. this week, including our man in the London cubicle, but by Odin’s beard we simply cannot say anything right now about it. What’s it about? Well after restoring the good times to Earth and the Nine Realms, a new ancient race led by Maliketh (Christopher Eccleston) threatens to plunge the universe into a darkness they haven’t seen until the last time some baddies promised to plunge the universe into darkness. This foe is so badass that Thor has to turn to his treacherous broseph Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and form a shaky alliance with him so things don’t go to pot.

Willem Dafoe is now joining the diverse ranks of Bill Hader, David Bowie, Guy Pearce, Jared Harris and Crispin Glover in donning the platinum wig to play pop art icon Andy Warhol. The actor has joined French filmmaker Bertrand Bonello's "Saint Laurent," a biopic about the famed fashion designer. Not to be confused with The Weinstein Company movie also in production, this much starrier endeavor features Gaspard Ulliel in the title role, with Olga Kurylenko, Jérémie Renier, Léa Seydoux, Louis Garrel, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Amira Casar in support. Cameras are rolling on the film which is already slated for a May 14, 2014 release in France. Can you say Cannes?

While he may not be as beloved as that other Paul Anderson, shlock-auteur Paul W.S. Anderson has never been hurting for work. His latest effort, the period-disaster 3D film “Pompeii” has seen a flurry of casting additions and it now has a release date smack dab in the middle of the early-year dumping ground.

While his lengthy, syllable-heavy name likely means he one tossed around the household with ease anytime soon, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is likely too busy impressing the hell out of audiences to care. Perhaps best known for playing Adebisi on "Oz" and Mr. Eko on "Lost," the actor is now gearing up to bring his commanding presence to one of next year's biggest movies.
