At just 22, Emma Roberts (“It's Kind of a Funny Story,” “The Art of Getting By,” “Celeste and Jesse Forever”) is about the same age her aunt Julia was when she shot to stardom with the iconic hit “Pretty Woman.” But times have changed, and in Emma’s latest rom-com — Scott Coffey’s “Adult World,” which premiered this week at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival — she plays not a hooker with a heart of gold, but a virginal Syracuse graduate.

Tribeca Review: 'Adult World' Spins A Quirky Comedy That Doesn't Quite Come Together

The very first scene of "Adult World" should immediately set off warning bells. It's a glimpse of heroine Amy (Emma Roberts) as she contemplates suicide in much the same way someone goes about stacking bills; without weight, as if it's something of an eternal hassle. Except her worried countenance and the Sylvia Plath poster on the wall suggests she's being serious, and that this is supposed to be mildly funny that someone is sweating the details of suicide, even though this character already looks as if she's not taking this seriously. It's a confused way to introduce the audience to a character, as both suicidal and half-hearted.

2013 Tribeca preview
Running from April 17-28, the 12th incarnation of the Tribeca Film Festival starts this week. It's a festival which has only grown in stature and confidence over the years; those awkward toddler years in which the line up was rather unwieldy and the standard a little haphazard are now just a distant memory. And if you consider the festival's timing -- sandwiched between the titans of Sundance and Cannes -- the fact that it has managed to carve out a well-respected identity for itself, and not simply be seen as a potted version of one or an extended trailer for the other, is all the more impressive.
