Though it’s only open in a few theaters in Los Angeles and New York City, this weekend sees David Lowery’s gorgeous “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” expand across the country and hit VOD. Yesterday brought a graphic novel prologue and today brings something equally delightful and cool: a short behind-the-scenes doc shot by the Ross Brothers of “45365” and “Tchoupitoulas” fame (courtesy of Film.com).

Ain't Them Bodies Saints
This past weekend, David Lowery's searing and gorgeous "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" opened in limited release, hitting a few theaters in New York City. And while you wait patiently for the movie to roll into a theater near you — it expands next weekend, while also hitting VOD (though this is one we urge you to see on the big screen) — a little extra treat has arrived to hold you over until it arrives.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints
Set in 1970s Texas, but stationed inside an authentic milieu that feels timeless and classic, David Lowery's fourth feature-length effort, "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," is the culmination of a filmmaker who has put in over a decade of work in the trenches as an editor, cinematographer, writer, electrical department hand and more (fun fact: he's also the editor of Shane Carruth's "Upstream Color"). The jack of all trades is not only fluent in several languages within the vocabulary of this medium, he clearly has an innate understanding of each. Lowery is the real deal and understands filmmaking, and this is abundantly clear in this searing, romantic crime drama and love story.

There are many pieces that come together to make David Lowery's "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" one of the most memorable films of the year so far. From its finely modulated tone that tilts between foreboding and yearning, to a blend of pitch perfect performances from the cast including Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Nate Parker and Keith Carradine, this slow burn tale of two separated lovers on a collision course with both their future and past is a striking piece of work. But one other element that helps seal it all together is the score by Daniel Hart.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints
You already know that we're huge fans of David Lowery's film "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," starring Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck and Ben Foster; a lyrical, meditative take on the Southern gothic family crime drama, and a deeply felt love story all rolled into one. At its debut at Sundance, we wrote in our review that, "Lowery is the real deal and understands filmmaking, and this is abundantly clear in this searing, romantic crime drama and love story." We also put the film on our "13 Films to See in August" list, and now we're here to help you do just that.

“Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”
There's a reason we highlighted David Lowery's "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" as one of the 13 Films You Should See In August—it's simply one of the best movies not only of this month, but of the entire year. The picture, which we've been raving about since Sundance, is a gorgeous, slow burn story of romance and fading legends. It's a Texas tale with an emotional heart as wide as the sun-kissed horizon, and it's definitely one you'll want to experience on a big screen. And with a couple weeks to go before its release, it looks like we're getting a few more peeks at the flick.

12 Films You Should See In August
August usually means backpacks, school, and the slow slog to the holidays and the end of the year (can you tell I’m not looking forward to summer‘s end?). One place where the end isn’t apparent is at the local multiplex, where there is so much going in August that I’m throwing in an additional two films for you on top of the requisite ten! Just think, August used to be a dumping ground for films that weren’t bombastic enough for summer but lacked the Oscar clout for the winter; now it’s that special time where independent films can flourish and audiences can remember why they love movies in the first place.

When "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" premiered at Sundance earlier this year, the strong reviews from critics (including ours) and praise from audiences put writer/director David Lowery on notice in Hollywood. Indeed, Disney tapped him to write their reboot of "Pete's Dragon," he's writing and directing "The Old Mad And The Gun" with Robert Redford attached to star, and he's slated to helm the old David Fincher project "Torso." And soon, those of us who weren't in Park City will get to experience what got audiences in the mountain city all excited in the first place.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints (skip)
Last night the Brooklyn Academy of Music kicked off its 5th annual BAMcinemaFest, a 10-day showcase of independent films culled from Cannes, Sundance, TIFF, Berlin, SXSW and other festivals from around the world. Highlights from this year’s lineup include James Ponsoldt's teen romance "The Spectacular Now," Sebastian Silva's druggy road trip adventure "Crystal Fairy," Joe Swanberg's relationship comedy "Drinking Buddies," Dustin Cretton's heartrending foster care facility-set drama "Short Term '12" and many, many more. Check out the full line-up here. But for opening night they scored the NYC Premiere of perhaps the buzziest film out of Sundance this year, David Lowery's "Ain't Them Bodies Saints." When we caught the film at Sundance we called it, "a wholly engrossing and impressive piece of work that the movie world will be talking about all year long."

The Best movies of 2013 so far
Wow, wait, okay, what? It’s June? Right! So here we are again, rapidly approaching the midpoint of another year, and as is our custom, we’re taking a moment to pause and look back at 2013 so far, and to discuss, debate, and throw hissy fits over what we collectively consider the best films we’ve seen so far. As regards bigger releases, the year up to now has been, if we’re honest, a little so-so, with the blockbuster hopefuls ranging from the slightly disappointing to the outright dire (“Star Trek Into Darkness,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Pain & Gain,” “After Earth,” “Oblivion,” with “Iron Man 3” probably proving the best of the bunch to date). That said, in the smaller screens of your multiplex, and at the arthouse, a few gems have found their way through and there is a positive bevy of films we’ve been lucky enough to catch early, that are coming down the pike soon, that are so good they should drag up the base standard of the year by some margin.
