Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Looks like somebody has a case of the Mondays. The cherished children's book "Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst is headed to the big screen, and it looks like it will live up to the title in more ways than one.

Tammy, Melisa McCarthy
In case you missed it, Redbox revealed their top 10 most rented titles of 2013 on Christmas Eve, and two films from comedian Melissa McCarthy, "The Heat" and "Identity Thief," nabbed the top two slots. Not too shabby. Plus now you know what the rest of the country does when they rent movies. Suffice to say the "Bridesmaids" breakout actress has become a bona fide star in her own right.

While Miguel Arteta hasn't yet had a big screen smash hit with his features efforts "Youth In Revolt" and "Cedar Rapids," he has established himself as a director in firm command of comedy, with credits on the small screen that include "New Girl," "Enlightened," "Nurse Jackie," "House Of Lies" and more. And we can only imagine those skills have helped him land the job on one of Disney's next efforts aimed at kids.

With credits that include "The Kids Are All Right," "Laurel Canyon," "High Art" and "The L Word," Lisa Cholodenko didn't always seem like the obvious choice to co-write (with Ron Lieber) and direct "Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day." But she's been developing the vehicle for a while, first at Fox and then at Disney who picked the project up when it went into turnaround. But as the movie continues to move forward, Cholodenko has decided she won't get behind the camera after all.

With every studio regime change there remains a number of promising projects left to die a slow death in turnaround, and when 20th Century Fox CEO Tom Rothman stepped down in September this was certainly the case. The first casualty turned out to be the adaptation of beloved children's book "Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" -- with both Lisa Cholodenko and Steve Carell attached -- but now after nearly a month of studio bargaining it seems the film has found a more family-friendly home.

In case you're too immersed in the all-too-random minute breadcrumbs that possibly point to Thanos being the villain in "The Avengers 2," Patrick Stewart potentially nodding in the affirmative that he'll be Professor X again one day, or that webshooters are being retroactively retrofitted into old "Spider-Man" trailers, you may have missed that there's a regime change over at 20th Century Fox. Tom Rothman is out, and when Chairman and CEOs "step down" (euphemism), companies tend to take stock of their wares and decide what they can let go or kick to the curb.

So what do you do after you've helmed what is arguably the most successful film of your career? If you're Lisa Cholodenko, the co-writer and director behind "The Kids Are All Right," you use that momentum to try something brand new. Last spring, she signed on to helm an adaptation of the celebrated kids' book "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Vorst, and now it looks like one of the biggest comedy stars around is going to lend his talent to the picture.
