Birdman
Tomorrow, the Toronto International Film Festival unveils their first wave of titles, and many are already speculating what it will look like given their new rules. Basically, after being scooped on big titles by Telluride the past few years, Toronto has essentially told distributors that any movie that wants to play the crucial opening days of TIFF must be a true premiere. That means no sneaking it to Colorado a few days before. So this next announcement is an interesting one.

Last week saw a flurry of rumors greet "Gravity" director Alfonso Cuarón. First came word that he was in talks to direct "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find To Them," and was followed a few days later by more news that Warner Bros. was offering him "The Shining" prequel "Overlook Hotel." But it would seem it's all a bit premature.

Alfonso Cuaron The Overlook Hotel
After the smash, Oscar winning success of the completely original sci-fi thrill ride "Gravity," Warner Bros. wants to work with director Alfonso Cuaron again — but only on established properties. At least that's what the rumor mill is saying. Earlier this week, word surfaced that Cuaron was in talks with Warner Bros. to direct their 'Harry Potter' spinoff, "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them." And now a fresh piece of intel (as always, take with a grain of salt and don't freak out) has Cuaron being approached to direct a prequel to Stanely Kubrick's classic "The Shining" titled "The Overlook Hotel."

Gravity, Cuaron
Of the handful of directors to tackle the 'Harry Potter' series, Alfonso Cuarón has largely been regarded as having directed the best entry, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." But fresh in the glow of "Gravity"—a box office smash, critical favorite and multiple Oscar winner—where he could probably do pretty much anything he wants, will he return to the world of wizards?

Alfonso Cuaron Emma Watson
For the rest of his career, the words "Oscar winner" will precede the name of Alfonso Cuarón, and it's certainly been a journey to get there. The director's latest, "Gravity," was a labor of love, technology and the faith it would turn out, with the years-in-the-making film turning out to be not only a box office hit, but an awards season favorite, ultimately walking away with two of the three major trophies it was nominated for. But before he had the golden statue to put on his mantle, he was still another flimmaker with an excellent body of work hoping to get to the next level.

Lupita Nyong'o, Oscars
For anyone watching the Oscars at home last night, they may have noticed something a different about the speeches this year....no one really got played off.
