Festival opening films are always something of a roll of the dice. Organizers are always keen to bring some star power, so it tends to be one of the more high profile picks around, but often they may want to save the real quality for the main competition, so you'll often end up with something a little sub-par. As far as festivals go, though, Venice has a pretty good track record.

As far as two people to create a TV series together, it'd be hard to do much better than J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron. The former is, obviously, the man behind hits like "Alias," "Lost" and "Revolution," while the latter is the acclaimed filmmaker behind "Children Of Men," who'll make his long-awaited return this October with "Gravity." The delayed post-production on the latter gave Cuaron the time to cook up "Believe" with Abrams, and direct a pilot, NBC picked up the show, and now a trailer has arrived, via /Film.

Perhaps a recap of the journey we've been on with "Gravity" is in order. Gravity trailer, Clooney
Alfonso Cuarón's long-awaited follow-up to 2006's "Children of Men"is finally here. Or at least the trailer is. Or wait, that's coming Thursday. So what do we have in the meantime? Well, it's about 10 seconds or less of teaser footage from the upcoming trailer for "Gravity," Cuarón's outer space thriller starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Yes, you hate the tease of a tease. Understandably, so do we. But admittedly, this film has been in the works for so long now it is somewhat of a relief to finally see some evidence that it finally and actually exists.

In recent years, trying to predict the Oscar nominees in the Best Director category has been especially tricky. In the past, you could just translate over your Best Picture nominees, maybe swap one out for a better-known or showier filmmaker, and you were relatively likely to be correct. But ever since the Academy made the switch to having more than five nominees in the top category it's become more unpredictable, especially if you're trying to make your predictions a year in advance.

People are desperate for any news about what J.J. Abrams and co. are cooking up for "Star Wars: Episode 7," so even thin rumors from sources like the generally totally out there MarketSaw tend to be speculated upon. But sometimes you just gotta know better, and this appears to be one of those times. With the site claiming that Alfonso Cuaron was being considered to helm one of the sequels, they also casually tossed in this morsel from their source: "...expect Simon Pegg to be involved in some capacity. Can't say why, but lets just say I have a strong feeling about that." But the actor himself has addressed those rumors.

Happy New Year, J.J. Abrams! As January winds to a close, the events of the past week have basically suggested that Abrams is essentially the new Steven Spielberg. Last night, Disney officially confirmed the news that J.J. Abrams has signed on to direct "Star Wars: Episode 7" (see press release below). But of course the big question is what becomes of Abrams' relationship with Paramount?

Alfonso Cuarón's 'Gravity' Finally Scores October 4th Release Date

Some two years in the making and add another two for development (at least), Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity" has finally scored an October 4, 2013 release date. Originally pegged for a November 2012 release, Warner Bros. took it off last year's calendar for unspecified reasons, but most presumed this was due to the VFX-heavy nature of the film that was shot completely in soundstages and in 3D. Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, "Gravity" has been a long time coming and so much so it's taken on mythic proportions in some corners fo the blogosphere that have declared it a kind of Kubrick-ian return. It probably doesn't hurt that Cuarón hasn't made a movie since 2006's "Children of Men." Six years between movies will create legend and buzz.

As we continue to patiently wait for Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" to get a release date and a marketing campaign from Warner Bros., it seems even the filmmaker himself is getting a bit antsy, and is lining up his first small-screen gig in nearly a decade.
