While there are still not enough good roles for women out there, particularly in mainstream Hollywood, that hasn't stopped a batch of young female stars from exploding from out of nowhere in recent years. Head-turning performances have helped launch faces like Carey Mulligan, Mia Wasikowska, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Felicity Jones and many others into the stratosphere, and the success last weekend of "The Hunger Games" has hopefully put to rest the fallacy that huge audiences won't turn up to big movies carried by a woman.

It's generally agreed that television is as good as it's ever been. Of course, there's a lot of rubbish on, as there always was, but virtually every night, year round, brings more quality comedy and drama than you could possibly hope to watch. The next few weeks alone bring the return of "Mad Men" and "Game of Thrones," two of the most acclaimed cable dramas of recent years, while "Justified" and "Luck," muscular, cinematic long-form tales as strong as anything the big screen has seen recently, wrap up their seasons, and other favorites like "Breaking Bad," "Louie" and "Homeland" will be back before the year is out, along, we hope, with a raft of excellent new shows.

With the countless number of romantic comedies focused on how difficult it is for a woman to find a good man, it’s incredibly refreshing to see one where the tables are turned. In “Save The Date,” Lizzy Caplan stars as Sarah, a struggling illustrator who keeps herself afloat by managing a local book store.

Emily Blunt Confirmed As Female Lead Opposite Jason SegelAMC's "Mad Men" is pretty much the best drama series on television; "Breaking Bad" might give it a run for its money, but we reckon the period piece has the edge. While it's more divisive (including within the staff of The Playlist) NBC's "Community" is, for this writer, the best comedy on television -- with an ambition and, generally speaking, a level of execution (the show can be patchy occasionally) above even the excellent "Parks and Recreation" and "30 Rock." And there's one person that links the two: 27-year-old actress Alison Brie.
