American Hustle Jennifer Lawrence
After tantalizing glimpses of David O. Russell's “American Hustle” through its trailer and a six-minute preview at AFI Fest, the end result has screened for critics and indeed it seems another mostly solid hit for the “Silver Linings Playbook” director. Alongside its major NYFCC awards win, our review deemed the film “decidedly more admirable than affecting,” but with a limited release starting this week, Sony is pushing for spreading the word even more.

Ah, Time magazine... the once venerable publication that might actually name Miley Cyrus as their Person Of The Year (she's currently leading online voting). Last year, the mag angered certain corners of the internet by declaring "Cloud Atlas" as their worst film of 2012, while their mostly decent top ten also included "Frankenweenie." And this year, critic Richard Corliss has increased the oddball choices.

First! Once again, the New York Film Critics Circle made filmmakers and studios sweat to get their films screened in time as they position themselves to be the first (official) word on the awards race and augur of things to come ... at least until the National Board Of Review weighs in tomorrow. But for now, it looks like David O. Russell's "American Hustle" is the one to beat over the next couple of months.

And the clock continues to tick down for "American Hustle," it remains, along with "The Wolf Of Wall Street," the only true question mark of the awards season. Is it going to put David O. Russell back in the awards race following two big successes with "The Fighter" and "Silver Linings Playbook," or is just a big piece of pop eye candy?
