So we’re completing a year of record domestic box office returns, but it’s impossible to ignore that the international market is a hefty player, taking a bigger overall chunk of the pie. It’s not good enough for a picture to perform in America – if it doesn’t grab more than half its share from international crowds, it’s not a complete success. The proliferation of franchises and 3D have turned most American films into our most in-demand export, and it’s changed the box office landscape immensely.

Franchises. Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. And if you're Hollywood, you just can't live without them, period. The Hollywood Reporter has done a quick rundown of would-be series likely to spawn sequels in their latest issue, and if you've been following the box-office numbers, none of the choices should be much of a surprise.

Weekend Box Office: 'The Hunger Games' Hurtles Towards $300 Million, Leaving 'Titanic' & 'American Reunion' In The Dust

Consider this a matchup of brands moreso than movies. "The Hunger Games" ruled the roost for the third straight weekend, the new millennial hit beating back two 90's sensations with ease, almost suggesting a passing of the torch. Young people will always like sweeping romance and bawdy sex, but for this weekend, it was all about that popular pastime of child-on-child murder.

So “The Hunger Games” is still doing quite well, “Wrath of the Titans” is performing tolerably, but looking to ripple the waters this weekend is the behemoth of behemoth blockbuster movies, “Titanic (in 3D),” which (re)opened on Wednesday. It will again make James Cameron a boatload of money (HA) so he can buy another submarine or whatever he uses his money for. Not a bad life Cameron, not bad at all. Oh, and some other movies opened as well, in the event that you’re in the mood for something other than a large-budget epic with sick CGI. Thrillers, indie comedies, and dramedies set in Vatican City abound this week: sit back, relax, and “never let go, Jack.” (I'm so sorry for that. I just couldn’t resist.)

Review: 'American Reunion' Is A Stale Slice Of 'Pie' That Coasts On Nostalgia & Cameos

“American Reunion” begins with the franchise’s typical sexual misunderstanding played for casual sitcom laughs. Married couple Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) are preparing for bedtime when she excuses herself to take a late night bath. Without saying a word, Jim watches her leave before visiting bookmarked porn sites on his laptop computer, pleasing himself with a sock filled with what can only be considered an excessive amount of lubrication. Through a few prepackaged pratfalls too implausible to properly explain, Jim and Michelle’s pre-pubescent son learns that Mommy and Daddy had been pleasuring themselves in separate rooms, and lack the self-awareness to properly shield themselves when caught. The camera stays fixed on the silent milieu of an embarrassed Michelle shrinking underneath the bubbles in her bathtub, and Jim clenching the bleeding tip of his crotch, the two of them separated by a shower handle excitedly dancing across the tiles. It is quite possibly the saddest opening scene in recent studio comedy history.

The class of '99 returns next week in "American Reunion" and advance word we're hearing is...not terrible. People we thought would thoroughly hate the film have come back with more positive feedback than we expected, and it seems the good vibes of the marketing campaign can be found in the product as well.

It may be over ten years since the class of '99 walked the hallways of their high school, but it seems for Stifler, Jim, Michelle and the rest of the gang, the playlist hasn't really changed.

It has been nearly ten years since the entire "American Pie" gang have been on the big screen (fun/depressing fact: Eugene Levy has appeared in every movie of the franchise, including all of home video spinoffs). But all of that is about to change with "American Reunion," which brings everyone back for one more slice of raunchy fun.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Or something. With the "American Pie" franchise spawning seven sequels/spinoffs -- including this spring's "American Reunion" -- they haven't changed the format of the films (for better or worse), and with the entire gang now back together, cum-stuck pages of porno mags still rank as high comedy.

One TV show-turned-movie and another sequel. That pretty much speaks to the cinematic climate these days, but at least one of them looks like it's going to be a ton of fun.
