It's been three years since Dee Rees 2011's observant and beautiful "Pariah," and we've been patiently waiting for her next effort. She's certainly been busy, penning "Large Print," teamed with Viola Davis on a HBO project, lined up the indie romance "This Man, This Woman," and last fall, she even took a leap to sci-fi, signing up to adapt and direct Philip K. Dick’s "Martian Time-Slip." And then we heard nothing since, but it looks like Rees is finally getting back behind the camera, for what soudns like a very promising project.

Pitched somewhere between a David Fincher crime procedural, a Denis Lehane suspense novel and a “Mommie Dearest” melodrama, documentarian Amy Berg’s move into the feature-length world of dramatic narrative is by nature of the material, an uneven one. It’s not for want of trying, however. Making her narrative debut here, Berg directs the hell out of every crime segment in the film, and there’s a strong level of craft in sequences that would make Fincher and “Se7en” DP Darius Khondji proud. And Nicole Holofcener’s adaptation of the book doesn’t have any real egregious material, at least not in its dialogue.

Earlier this week, some bombshell allegations rocked Hollywood, when 31-year-old Michael Egan filed a federal lawsuit accusing "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" director Bryan Singer of sexually abusing him on numerous occasions in 1999. Singer's lawyers swiftly denied the allegations, and have announced plans to countersue. But the story has now taken another turn, and one that goes beyond the court proceedings.

At one point this summer, the officially-sanctioned Jeff Buckley biopic "Mystery White Boy" was supposed to be shooting with "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" star Reeve Carney in the lead and Jake Scott directing, with Gemma Arterton, Olivia Thirlby, Harry Treadaway and Patricia Arquette all lining up for roles. And then...nothing. Well, it appears that not only has a new director come on board, but the project may also be looking for a new lead.

Earlier this year, documentarian Amy Berg ("Deliver Us From Evil") arrived at the Sundance Film Festival with mild controversy and lots of interest with "West of Memphis," a brand new documentary on the West Memphis Three with some startling new revelations. For better or worse, a lot of the attention came from Peter Jackson's involvement with the case and with the film as a producer. But for Berg's feature fiction narrative debut, she'll be standing all on her own with some pretty nice names supporting her as well.
