Benedict Cumberbatch Out, Choosing To Do Brit WWI-era Mini-seriesIt's been a while since we've heard anything on Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina" -- mostly because the press rounds for "Hanna" have ended -- but today comes a fresh bit of casting news about the film. But before we get to that, let's just re-cap for a second shall we? Last fall, came first word that Keira Knightley would re-team with her "Atonement" and "Pride & Prejudice" director for the film. Then, this spring, Jude Law and Aaron Johnson came aboard with Joe Wright later saying that Kelly Macdonald and Benedict Cumberbatch had joined the film, and that he was waiting on Saoirse Ronan and James McAvoy to confirm.

Gillian Anderson & Aidan Gillen Round Out CastFirst announced way back last fall, "Man On Wire" director James Marsh had lined up a crackling cast for his IRA thriller "Shadow Dancer" (which may or may not be using that title any longer). Rebecca Hall and Guy Pearce were set to star but Vulture caught up with the director recently and it looks like plans have changed a bit.

With Brad Pitt (and Angelina Jolie likely in tow) and Sean Penn pretty much guaranteed to hit the Cannes Film Festival this year for Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life," paparazzi are going to be out in full force, and when reports surfaced last week that the Queen Of Pop herself was headed for the Croisette with her latest directorial effort "W.E." we can only imagine that photogs thought they had struck gold. But alas, Madonna won't be hitting the south of France this spring.

New Shorts From Kirsten Dunst, Sam Taylor-Wood & MoreAs any cinephile will note, women have been sitting in the director's chair since the inception of filmmaking itself, but it seems only recently that their voices have become more numerous-- and more, dare we say, bankable. High profile names such as Kathryn Bigelow and Sofia Coppola are garnering more attention in Hollywood, with Bigelow even becoming the first female to ever win the Oscar for Best Director at the ceremony last year. But the truth is, women filmmakers have as many voices to bring to the table as their male counterparts, the philosophy it would appear, behind the American Cinemateque's "Focus on Female Filmmakers" program, an annual event at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The night was an eclectic collection of short films by women directors, ranging from documentary, to dance, to animation to biblical re-tellings.
