The 10 Most Promising Network Shows For Fall 2013

This week concluded the yearly "up-fronts," where advertisers and affiliates convene in New York City so that the various networks can trot out their exciting new fall products. It brings an end to "pilot season," in which initial episodes are furiously produced and then handily judged, and kicks off the excitement for the following fall. (Even though, as we're becoming increasingly aware, the traditional notions of when shows are supposed to air and how long they're supposed to be are blurring considerably.) Out of all of the new shows – dozens and dozens of hours of freshly scripted content – we have chosen the ten shows that we find the most promising; five hour-long dramas and five sitcoms. It's hard to believe that up until now, "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy hasn't tried to bring his musical success to the big screen. Instead, he went traveling around the world with Julia Roberts (who wouldn't?!) in "Eat Pray Love," and is developing the AIDS drama "The Normal Heart." But it seems he hasn't left big, gaudy numbers behind as he's gearing up a star studded musical to destroy your ears.

You gotta hand it to Adam Sandler. No matter what you might think of his puerile excuses for movies, he's made a career out of getting paid to hang out with his friends and deliver loosely patched together series of images that he calls "movies." And he's getting another chance to roll with his homies, and this time, he won't even have to put up the pretense of shaving or wearing pants.

The cast members of "The Lord of the Rings" have had mixed success in the eight years since the franchise wrapped up. Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom became fully-fledged movie stars (the latter less so in recent years), and Dominic Monaghan managed surprising longevity as a star of "Lost," but Sean Astin's mostly been stuck in Adam Sandler movies and one-off TV appearances, while we're pretty sure that Billy Boyd washed our windshield at a traffic light not so long ago.

'The Vicious Kind' Director Lee Toland Krieger At The HelmPresumably, Rashida Jones has some kind of flaw. You can't be bitten by Michael Jackson's pet monkey Bubbles as a child (as she was) and come out completely unscathed. But she certainly doesn't seem to demonstrate any: the Harvard-educated daughter of legendary music producer Quincy Jones has made it entirely on her own steam, thanks to being traffic-stoppingly beautiful and immensely talented, both comedically (recent episodes of the spectacularly good "Parks and Recreation," on which she's a regular, have seen her stretch her comic wings) and dramatically (see "Monogamy," where she's infinitely better than the film, or "The Social Network"). Sidenote, to Zack Snyder: she's also the best possible choice to play Lois Lane, and you should hire her right now.

A new trailer has landed for "Easy A" director Will Gluck's follow-up to his fantastic comedy vehicle that made launched Emma Stone's career into the stratosphere, and it wastes no time in giving up/ruining the goods. Cameos by Emma Stone and Andy Samberg are out of the way in the first 10 seconds, and hey, Woody Harrelson plays a gay dude! While we would've liked those surprises to have remained until we saw the film, we have to say, that we were still pretty charmed by this one and our optimism remains intact.

Though she doesn't have too many notches on her belt, her turns in "Funny People," "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" and "Parks and Recreation" are extremely impressive, displaying a young talent with a knack for comedic timing and wit. Whether it's keeping up with Seth Rogen's deadpan, dry deliveries in Judd Apatow's last picture or actively (and abrasively) berating Michael Cera in Edgar Wright's underrated gem, Plaza did it all effortlessly and showed that she was more than just a one-note actress with a cute face. She's gonna be somebody, she's gonna be a contenda.
