"Once Upon A Time In Anatolia," "Compliance," "Sleepwalk With Me," "Nobody Walks," "No" and a handful more...I wish I could have seen them, but it just didn't happen.

We're about 18 hours until Oscar nominations time, but even after the DGAs yesterday and the BAFTAs at stupid o'clock this morning, there's still time for one more precursor to sneak in under the wire, and this time, it's the American Society of Cinematographers, the major equivalent to a guild award (although it's not a guild, or a union) for the directors of photography of the movie world.

2012 was all about escape. Not only in terms of the big-budget movies that offered us escape from the increasingly ugly real world (how many superheroes or swoony vampires can we stomach?), but by the content of the more adult movies. Characters wanted an escape – from slavery, from a futuristic Korea, from time-travel gangsters, from a burdensome lover – and in these stories we were afforded tremendous freedom. They transported us, for sure, while reminding us of the very real hardships 2012 afforded us all. Below are my very favorite movies of the year, all of which I will be escaping to, again and again, for years to come.

How I reacted to the films I saw in 2012 can be completely personal and different than any of my colleagues on this site, but that’s what makes it interesting. Where we come together and where we disagree is the fun of it all, really, and has made for many a lively Twitter debate among us.

While "Zero Dark Thirty" seems to be the movie to beat at the moment, another picture is slowly gaining momentum. The punishing yet beautiful "Amour" is not only poised to be a major player in the Foreign Language category at the Oscars, but many think it could sneak into the Best Picture race as well. And indeed, Time magazine seems to be in love in with it.

And while our remit has grown over time, it's still something we take a particular interest in. After all, it's hard to think of major movies in which music doesn't play a key part, from a piece of score elevating a key sequence to a pop song that becomes inextricably linked with a film until the end of time.

Today sees the release of Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina," the latest attempt to adapt Leo Tolstoy's unruly epic of Russian literature to the screen. It's far from the first, with silent versions arriving as early as 1910, while the most recent was Bernard Rose's take in 1997. But Wright's version numbers among the best, thanks to a fine cast, a bold, cinematic approach to the material, and astonishing production values. You can read our review of the film here.

On the eve of his newest film, "Anna Karenina," we thought we would go through the five most amazing shots in his oeuvre (whittling them down was something of a challenge). As an added bonus, we got to talk to Seamus McGarvey, the cinematographer behind behind three of the five scenes, including the one from "Anna Karenina," about what it was like crafting these truly unforgettable moments. Oscars: Dancing With 'Anna Karenina' As The Costume & Production Design Awards Come Into Play

Friday sees the release of Joe Wright's version of "Anna Karenina," a film which, over the last few months, has become something of a Playlist favorite. A bold, non-naturalistic take on Tolstoy's classic, it's proven to be hugely divisive -- some have mocked it as near-disastrous, some (including this writer, and several other senior Playlist staff members) consider it among the finest films of the year. As such, this divisiveness has likely, and sadly, put paid to the film's chances in most of the big ticket Oscar races. Best Picture, Director and Screenplay are very long shots at this stage, and even Keira Knightley, a presumptive frontrunner for Best Actress before the film was seen, may find herself outside the final five when all is said and done.
