When it was announced that Joe Wright was going to direct a new film version of Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina," starring his cinematic muse Keira Knightley, most people probably knew what to expect. After all, the two had collaborated on both Wright's debut "Pride & Prejudice" and "Atonement" (both also produced by Working Title Films) and it was easy to assume that their take on the Russian classic would be along similar lines; a handsome period piece taking advantage of the best British actors available, and with a few showy camera touches that would set it apart from your average costume drama.

As you might've gleaned by now, Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly" is not your average movie about low lifes and gangsters. When we caught the film at Cannes, we called it "breathtakingly brilliant and admirably ambitious" as as well as "angry" with the filmmaker painting not just a story about about the fate of some hoods who knock off a mob-protected poker game, but a portrait of America itself as it rots from the inside.

Over the weekend, this writer finished reading "Persuader," one of Lee Child's dozen plus books centering on ex-military man turned drifter/problem solver Jack Reacher, and it only underscores how divisive the casting of Tom Cruise is in "Jack Reacher," based on "One Shot." In the books, Reacher is a six foot something, larger than life bruiser whose sheer physical size can be intimdating to those who cross his path -- not exactly the kind of image you get from the 5'7" Cruise. But with a new image now landing, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie is ready to address the doubters.

This fall will see director Joe Wright seemingly return to the comfort zone of lit adaptations with Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina," which reunites him with his "Atonement" star Keira Knightley in the titular role. Another period drama you ask? Not quite. Wright has shot most of the picture on a single soundstage with interlocking sets built at London's Shepperton Studios with a strong British cast that sees Knightley surrounded by names like Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Kelly Macdonald, Olivia Williams, Ruth Wilson and Holliday Grainger.

It seems folks are still divided on Joe Wright's undeniably audacious take on Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina." After a trailer and a generous six minute clip, some haven't cottoned to Wright's approach, while this writer, at least, has fallen for what has been on display so far, something that at least looks like a fresh approach to literary drama tropes. And with the film just over a month away from its U.K. release and festival bow on this side of the ocean, another peek at the movie has arrived.

So this morning, Variety spilled the beans on the first wave of announcements for the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, and... boy, it looks like a great year. So much so that we wonder how much is left over for other fall festivals like Venice or Telluride. A few of the most anticipated films won't be world premieres, suggesting that they'll be popping up elsewhere shortly before, but we count 40 films announced so far as world premieres, among them films that are sure to make major waves.

The fall filmgoing season won't be lacking film's of ambition, from Paul Thomas Anderson's 65mm look at the formation of a cult in "The Master" to Baz Luhrmann's 3D take on "The Great Gatsby" to the fantastical razzle dazzle of Ang Lee's 3D "Life Of Pi." But also aiming squarely for your eyes and heart as well is Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina" and this generous six minute clip showcases a film that is swinging all the way to fences.

Most of the world's film press might be at Comic-Con right now (including a Playlister), but we're already starting to itch for the start of festival season. After all, with "The Dark Knight Rises" hitting theaters this week, there's only a few weeks of summer blockbuster season left, and the fall festivals -- Toronto, Telluride, et al. -- will almost be upon us. Things kick off in about six weeks time with the Venice Film Festival, and a major Italian newspaper has just run a report that, if true, confirms a few long-rumored pictures for the festival as well as adding a few more names to the mix.

After unveiling a rather sumptuous trailer last month, the slowly building marketing campaign for Joe Wright's promisingly dazzling "Anna Karenina" continues, now with a new poster for the movie that puts Keira Knightley in the path of an oncoming train. Anyone who's read the book will know what that means.
