At the start of “Another Earth,” there are two shocks administered to the audience. The first is that another planet has been discovered on the other side of the Sun, and it so closely resembles Earth that the brand new discovery is being referred to as Earth 2. This would be a galactic shocker, of course, but we are moved more by the second shock, which is the recklessness of teenaged Rhoda (Brit Marling), who drunkenly crashes her car into the vehicle of composer John (William Mapother). John survives, but his wife and child are now dead.

'Another Earth' Arrives This Summer, 'The Apparition' Scared Into 2012With opening weekends for a film now proving more and more important in the do-or-die atmosphere of Hollywood blockbusters, it's no surprise that jockeying for release dates now starts far in advance, as studios and distributors hope to make the right gamble for their movies. Whether you go for the full 10 days or just a portion of it, you’re bound to come back with at least a handful of films you’ll be talking about for the rest of the year. But with SXSW soon approaching and Sundance ‘11 firmly in the rear view, we thought it best to wrap up our Sundance coverage with some brief thoughts on the other films we saw at the festival this year.

As good red-blooded capitalists, we at The Playlist like nothing more than stories about people buying things for millions of dollars, and as such, the last week of January is one of our favorite times of year -- it's the time when acquisition executives descend in their hordes on Park City for the Sundance Film Festival in the hope of picking up the next indie breakout hit. Whether the films turn out to be the next "Little Miss Sunshine" or the next "Hamlet 2" won't be seen for months, for the most part, but it's certainly been a busier market than in recent years.
