It's been a full week since Marvel announced Edgar Wright's departure from "Ant-Man," the big question still lingers: who is going to take over the movie? It's just over thirteen months until the movie is scheduled to drop into theaters, and while fanboys have been hoping for names like the screenplay's original co-writer Joe Cornish (no chance) and "Guardians Of The Galaxy" helmer James Gunn (who recently denied rumors he was getting the gig), a fresh crop of contenders has surfaced and they are not the names you might be expecting.

Guardians, James Gunn, Ant-Man
So if you believed the morning rumors, which honestly smelled a little bit more like horseshit than usual, James Gunn, director of Marvel’s “The Guardians Of The Galaxy” was going to take over “Ant-Man” from the now departed Edgar Wright. Hey, Gunn was understanding of the problems between mom and dad, and hell, his Marvel movie was to 2014 what Wright’s “Ant-Man” was to 2015—a risk. Presumably Gunn’s done a great job of blending wacky comedy and “risk” along with the narrative foundations of what Marvel needs and expects for their tentpoles, so he’d make a good choice, right?

Memorial Day has come and gone and the reverberations of Edgar Wright's exit from "Ant-Man" are still being felt. It's one of the first major stumbles from Marvel's so far very well-oiled machine, and it still has fans reeling, wondering if the comic studio who are bringing this summer's "Galaxy Of The Guardians" will ever try such a risky move again. Indeed, Wright's hire — he'd been working on the movie since 2006 — initially seemed like a vote toward stepping outside the formulaic box of most Marvel movies. But with a rewrite changing the creative direction — allegedly a "shock" to the filmmaker — and in turn snuffing out Wright's interest, it has left a lot of questions up in the air, and the most key of them right now: can "Ant-Man" make its July 15, 2015 release date next summer?

Guardians, James Gunn, Ant-Man
If the Edgar Wright and Marvel split over “Ant-Man” is actually less amicable than originally suggested, maybe it is more akin to a “divorce” as fans have been putting it? After all, Wright developed the project for Marvel for eight years only to walk away late last week allegedly after a script rewrite that Wright agreed to, but didn’t love.

It’s called the news dump. You don’t drop news on a Friday at the end of the day, just hours before the Memorial Day weekend because you want people to read the news. In fact, this strategy hopes that by Monday you’ll have forgotten and life will go on.

The Marvel machine, for the most part, is a carefully scheduled, well-oiled machine, allowing the comic studio to deliver at least two movies per year and keep an eye on their brewing TV and streaming projects while continuing to build out their extended universe. But today, that synchronized operation got a major glitch.

The Avengers
Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man" seems to be done most of its major casting, but one more name has been announced. Relative unknown and "Terminator 3" actor Matt Gerard has joined the cast as the movie's villain; or one of them anyhow. The identity of that villain is currently unknown and like most Marvel movies, we assume they'll be more than one antagonist

Patrick Wilson doesn't do the blockbuster thing very often, and when he has — "Watchmen," "The A-Team" — the results have been mixed to say the least. But he's going to give it another shot, because when Marvel comes calling, you pick up the phone.
