Review: 'The Rite' Is Demonically Dull

William Friedkin pretty much ruined it for every other director after making "The Exorcist." Juggling a priest questioning his faith, a little girl possessed by the devil, pea soup, spinning heads, people falling down stairs and generally scaring the living shit out of viewers, ever since, films dabbling in the same thematic territory just haven't stacked up. More recent films like "The Last Exorcism" have tried to solve the problem by amping up the jump scares while the opposite tack taken by Paul Schrader's more cerebral approach for "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist" got him booted off the project, so full credit to director Mikael Håfström ("Derailed," "1408") for attempting something a little bit brainy. Just a shame that the wonky casting (Rutger Hauer? Alice Braga? Who allowed Colin O'Donoghue to lead a movie?) was distracting and the by-the-numbers and plodding script nearly put us to sleep.

Anthony Hopkins works a lot, and often his heart isn't in it. But how can you really hate the guy? He's a pro in everything, and his presence is undeniable, his delivery one of the very best in Hollywood. And so there's something fitting about the Oscar-winning legend climbing into some very massive shoes, as the actor isin talks to play Alfred Hitchcock in "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho."

The director of the acclaimed rockumentary "Anvil! The Story Of Anvil" Sacha Gervasi is reportedly in talks with Ivan Reitman's Montecito Pictures to take helm of their long-gestating Alfred Hitchcock biopic, based on the novel "Alfred Hitchcock And The Making Of 'Psycho'" by Stephen Rebello.

Ben Foster Joins Rachel Weisz & Anthony Hopkins In Fernando Meirelles' '360'

We were little worried about Ben Foster for a moment. He's going to be starring in the upcoming Jason Statham thing "The Mechanic" and he recently signed on to the pretty average-sounding thriller "Contraband" with Mark Wahlberg -- we were beginning to wonder if the Foster we knew from "The Messenger" and "3:10 to Yuma" was gone. Nope, no need to panic yet.
