With the BAFTAs now done and dusted -- and Ben Affleck seemingly one inch closer to a complete “Argo” victory -- the Oscars are next in line to focus everyone's attention on the films of 2012. The Academy should be pretty confident that people will indeed tune in, but this year they've nevertheless opted for a unique promotional campaign, one sitting right in line with the Mondo poster aesthetic.

After one of the most unprecditable Oscar seasons in memory, we're less than two weeks out, and things are finally starting to look more like an anointment than a contest; Ben Affleck's "Argo," counted out by many after the director missed out on an Oscar nomination, has won the top prizes from the Directors Guild, the Producers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild, all reliable Oscar precursors, as well as the Best Drama prize from the Critics Choice and Golden Globe awards, on top of many other critics' prizes.

It's been one of the most exciting and unpredictable award seasons in memory; a rich, diverse field of contenders, almost all of which are very good, and for the longest time it seemed like almost any of them could have taken the Best Picture award at the Oscars. But in the last couple of weeks, the narrative's starting to become a little narrower, with one film dominating the guild awards, which are traditionally the best precursors to the Academy Awards – Ben Affleck's terrific "Argo."

The Oscars aren't the only major awards ceremony in February that will attract movie stars and airheaded red carpet commentators in equal measure. Across the pond, the BAFTAs will hand out their trophies a couple weeks earlier, and attendees will get something nice too, just for showing up.

After a bit of a breather from awards season due to the Sundance Film Festival (in recent years, Oscar noms are announced during the festival, but the Academy moved it up this year), barely minutes elapsed between the Sundance awards ceremony and the first of a coming wave of precursors awards ceremonies.

With the focus this weekend on Park City with the Sundance Film Festival now in full swing, it might be easy to forget we're still in the midst of the awards season. And even though we're nearing the finishing line, with the Golden Globes already handed out, and a few more major guild awards and the Indie Spirits to come before the Oscars are awarded, critics circles are still getting their two cents in. And the latest to hand down their verdict on the year in film of 2012 are from the U.K., with the London Critics' Circle Awards honoring their winners today. And a big favorite of the season made a considerable impression.

Earlier: The oft-repeated maxim is that the Golden Globes do not matter. They do not. However, if you take the polar opposites of the season of critic awards (high-brow, cerebral) and the Globes (extremely populist), you can often (when also considering more significant Guild awards, of course) split the difference and land where the Academy Awards ultimately will.
