The Director Also Talks About What Would Have Been His Version Of 'The Hobbit' & More In Massive New Yorker TomeIf you haven't heard by now there's a massive dissertation-sized profile piece on filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro in the latest issue of the New Yorker. A fascinating read, the story, penned by Daniel Zalewski, touches on all facets of the 46-year-old filmmaker's life, from his obsession with monsters and macabre expertise in human and animal anatomy that started as a child growing up in Mexico; to his struggles with weight, his painful experiences on leaving "The Hobbit" and his Sisyphean task of bringing "At The Mountains Of Madness" to the big screen. The profile is about 20 pages long printed out and it's a full meal to digest to say the least. Touching upon "Frankenstein," to “Saturn and the End of Days,” the article doesn't even mention half the myriad projects Del Toro is working on, but one does get the sense from that filmmaker almost has too many irons in the fire and wants to make six movies at once. You're likely too busy surfing the web on your lunch break to read it all, but this is why you've got us to parse the most interesting need-to-know greatest hits of the profile.

Despite being rumored to be in a showdown with Tom Cruise for the lead role in Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming 3D adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At The Mountain Of Madness" and even being touted as the early studio favorite, James McAvoy has now revealed he's heard nothing regarding the Del Toro project let alone anything about an offer to take the lead role of Dyer.

Cruise Not Officially Signed On To Either Project Yet; Seth Rogen Denies His Musical InvolvementOK quickly, two things. While Tom Cruise will probably sign on to star in the musical "Rock of Ages" eventually, the man is notoriously picky so he must be asking for the script to be tweaked slightly or something because he's been in discussions to take a supporting part in Adam Shankman's new film for what feels like more than six months now (OK, it's more like four).

For such a typically garrulous director, Guillermo Del Toro has been strangely quiet since leaving "The Hobbit." That's a relative term, as few can talk up their own projects with the skill that Del Toro can, and he's got a ludicrous number of them circulating, from "Frankenstein," "Jekyll & Hyde" and "Slaughterhouse Five," to Disney's "Haunted Mansion," the animation "Trollhunters" and directing and producing the pilot to the new "Hulk" TV show for Marvel.

Filmmaker Says He Doesn't Want 'Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde,' Or 'Frankenstein' To Be In 3D, Is On The Fence About 'Slaughterhouse Five' Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is perhaps today's biggest genre-centric multi-tasker. If his projects file were a kitchen it would be jam-packed with several sous-chefs working on dishes in different states of readiness; many still marinating, trying out different sauce combinations, with some tested in various iterations and ready to to go on the grill.
