Life After Beth
In the last decade, left-of-center,"quirky" zombies have become so ubiquitous so as to reach critical mass. Just as many spoofs reach theaters as straight-ahead horror renditions. As with anything reaching its cultural saturation point, it’s the singer, not the song, and the results have been all over the spectrum, from the brilliant (“Shaun of the Dead”) to the forgettable (“Warm Bodies”). Despite significant talent both behind and in front of the camera, “Life After Beth” has trouble distinguishing itself. The film starts promisingly, opening with a foreboding shot of a girl wandering through Griffith Park, scored with ominous guitar squalls courtesy of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, who composed the film’s score, setting the tone for a film much weirder and more interesting than the one that follows.

Life After Beth, Aubrey Plaza
Sometimes the chemistry on a set works just perfectly, and you can just tell the cast had a ball making the movie. Such is the case with “Life After Beth,” Jeff Baena’s directorial debut, which premiered last week at the Sundance Film Festival. The zombie comedy has a lively cast led by Aubrey Plaza and Dane DeHaan, with comic talents Anna Kendrick, Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly, Matthew Gray Gubler, Cheryl Hines and Paul Reiser offering zany support.

About Alex
Every generation needs a couple of reunion movies, and in “About Alex" we have another one. First-time writer-director Jesse Zwick doesn't so much swing for the fences as attempt to dribble a single down the baseline. This comedy-drama doesn't reach any untold heights, but with formula pictures like this, you can only hope the company is pleasant. With this cast, those meager expectations are reached.

Life After Beth
Relationships end all the time, but every once in a while they start up again. Maybe those old fires are still burning, or maybe one cannot imagine life without the suddenly absent ex. But in "Life After Beth," a couple are put through a completely unexpected experience.

Ned Rifle, Hal Hartley, Aubrey Plaza
In 1997, Hal Hartley released "Henry Fool," one of the best films of his career, but no one seemed to notice, even though it won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes. But Hartley knew he had something with the characters and world he created and in 2007 he dropped a sequel, "Fay Grim." It was far less satisfying than its predecessor, but now in 2014 he's capping the trilogy with "Ned Rifle," and hopefully it will close the series on an up note.

Pawn Sacrifice
Furrowed brows, bad suits, worse haircuts—it can only mean one thing: chess. And that game of mental strategy is at the center of "Pawn Sacrifice," which heads to Toronto to make its World Premiere.

Life After Beth
The zombie genre has long been one where filmmakers—who attempt at least do something more than have a bunch of undead people lurching around—try to insert political and social context within the brains being eaten. And while there are plenty of places you can still find that, lately some directors have been trying to freshen things up a bit. Jonathan Levine fused romance and zombies with "Warm Bodies" a couple years back, and now comes "Life After Beth," where the heart yearns for the undead.

LIfe After Beth
We’ve seen myriad interpretations of the zombie movie, we’ve seen numerous versions of the romantic comedy too, but “Life After Beth,” the new indie flick that premiered at Sundance earlier this year, joins "Warm Bodies" in the category of zombie romcom, a distinction that only a few movies in the zombie genre have achieved.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
At one point a few years ago, Paul Greengrass was looking to make a biopic on legendary rocker Jimi Hendrix with Anthony Mackie in the lead. But when the Hendrix estate wouldn't sign off on the project, it fell apart and everyone moved on. But now, things are moving again. Mackie is back to play the axeman, with Ol Parker ("Now Is Good") at the helm of the movie "which chronicles the last nine days of Hendrix's life."
