Jane Austen has provided as fertile a ground for adaptation as nearly any author in the last century. From her most beloved works (“Pride & Prejudice” and “Sense and Sensibility") to more modern interpretations (“Clueless,” “Bridget Jones's Diary”), her work has inspired countless filmmakers to try their hand at bringing her stories to life. Between romantic literature courses, reruns of the BBC production of “Pride & Prejudice” and pop culture riffs like "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," new fans are still being made every day. In Sundance premiere “Austenland,” Keri Russell plays one such fan, Jane Hayes, a 30-something woman who has become so obsessed with finding a Mr. Darcy of her own, she’s inadvertently closed herself off to real relationships that fail to measure up with her fantasies.

Austenland
The goal of finding the perfect man seems to be the driving force for most run-of-the-mill romantic comedies, but it's given a bit of a twist in "Austenland," the feature debut of “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre” co-writer Jerusha Hess. You see, the perfect man in this movie isn't exactly real but he is famous... he's Mr. Darcy, the heartthrob in Jane Austen's "Pride And Prejudice"... Really....

This time around, we’ve got two clips from “Austenland,” which debuted last week, showcasing the film’s quirky, offbeat charm. You also get a pretty good taste of some of the cast, which includes Keri Russell, Jennifer Coolidge and "Flight of the Conchords" star Bret McKenzie.

The economy might be in rough shape, but major spending is taking place at the Sundance Film Festival. Relativity has already promised big bucks to promote Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut "Don Jon's Addiction" with a $25 million P&A commitment on top of a $4 million price tag. But Fox Searchlight may best them as they're reportedly set to pay $10 million for "The Descendants" writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash's directorial debut, "The Way, Way Back."

The Sundance Film Festival has been underway for a few days now, but the buyers' market has been slow to get moving. It's not entirely surprising; as we documented last week, a run of disappointments has left distributors a little more cautious than in the past, and with few films attracting across-the-board raves, there's further reason to keep the purse strings tightened until most of the major films have screened.

The idea of using a single band or singer-songwriter to score a film has fallen somewhat out of favor since the heyday of the 1960s/1970s, when films like "The Graduate" and "Harold & Maude" used the music of Simon & Garfunkel and Cat Stevens to echo and underline the on-screen action. But a few filmmakers, in conscious homage to those pictures, have given it a stab in recent years, with Badly Drawn Boy's work on "About A Boy" and the upcoming "Being Flynn," and Alex Turner's tunes for "Submarine" being among the more memorable examples.

'Twilight' Author Stephenie Meyer Producing, 'Napoleon Dynamite' Co-Writer Jerusha Hess Making Directorial DebutIf you've been feeling a strange, nagging void in the part of your soul where you keep your love for costume drama, there's a reason for that: we've somehow gone four years without a major Jane Austen-centered movie. Sure, Bollywood flick "Aisha" borrowed the plot of "Emma," and "From Prada to Nada" was (very) loosely based on "Sense & Sensibility," but given the wealth of adaptations, and even biographical entries like "Becoming Jane" and "Miss Austen Regrets" that appeared in the middle of the last decade, it doesn't quite compare.
