Discuss: Are You Actually Looking Forward To The 'Avatar' Sequels? James Cameron Offers Minor Update

There are exactly 2,782,275,172 reasons that Fox is going ahead with "Avatar" sequels -- yes, that is monumental worldwide box office for James Cameron's smash hit film. A technological wonder upon release, and responsible for ushering the onslaught of 3D movies to the multiplex, there is sound financial reason for the studio to press onward. And certainly, with the film moving units on home video (where it has already cycled through a couple different releases), it suggests that audiences are willing to return to Pandora. While the studio had initially set "Avatar 2" for a December 2014 release, followed in 2015 by part three, last summer it was revealed that wasn't going to happen, with 2015 said to be the earliest that any of the sequels might surface. And one reason why? Cameron is still writing the thing(s).

Oh yeah, this is still happening. With Marvel, "Justice League" and "Star Wars" gobbling up the franchise headlines in recent weeks and months, it's easy to forget that another mega serires is just waiting around the corner, with James Cameron getting ready to expand his "Avatar" universe. Right now the plan is for two sequels that will likely shoot back-to-back, with the possibility of an "Avatar 4" prequel (though even if it does happen, it won't be part of the "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3" production"). And while "Avatar 2" was initially slated for a December 2014 release, that timeline was bumped back earlier this year, and now it seems we might have some idea of when it will arrive.

It may be hard to recall these days the handful of movies that came out in 3-D before "Avatar." The film sent studios scrambling to post-convert as much of their slates as possible. As everyone on the planet knows, the film became the highest-grossing of all time and a worldwide phenomenon. So where are those sequels? Cameron has already decided to remain in the Na'vi business exclusively, but later announced that "Avatar 2" won't be ready until at least 2015.

This Tuesday, one of the biggest movies of all time, “Titanic,” is finally heading to blu-ray and James Cameron is hitting the press circuit for the second time this year and he’s sounding off on Kate Winslet’s complicated relationship with the blockbuster film, as well as what’s in store after “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3.”

What, exactly, is going on with James Cameron's "Avatar" sequels remains something of a mystery. Since the movie broke box office records in late 2009 (and reintroduced 3D in new and vital ways that few filmmakers have carried forward), it was largely assumed that there would be follow-up films and later it was confirmed that Fox would produce and release not one but two sequels, to be shot-back-to-back, tentatively scheduled for December 2014 and December 2015. But this summer Cameron made mention to the New York Times that "I'm making 'Avatar 2,' 'Avatar 3,' maybe 'Avatar 4.'" Well, not so fast. "Avatar" producer Jon Landau has gone on record as saying that Cameron's plan for a fourth movie might have been a little premature.

We suppose this isn't a total surprise. It was only back in May when the usually chatty James Cameron made it clear that he was only focusing on "Avatar" movies going forward, teasing at the possibility of a fourth entry in his new money-making, technology-busting franchise. "I’m in the 'Avatar' business. Period. That’s it. I’m making 'Avatar 2,' 'Avatar 3,' maybe 'Avatar 4,' " he said. And if this latest report is to be believed, not only is a fourth movie coming, he's also just gonna make all three of the "Avatar" sequels at once.

James Cameron has sailed the "Titanic," gone into outer space with "Aliens" and traveled through time with "Terminator." But it looks like the director has committed a large portion of his upcoming cinematic career to the world of "Avatar," to the point where he says he's no longer going to even be considering new feature film projects.

How do you follow the biggest movie of all time? Well, you make a sequel, dummy. Unlike his previous mega-hit "Titanic," which was crippled, follow-up wise, by the boat sinking and most of the characters dying (not that it's stopped this week's 3D re-release, of course), James Cameron was only getting started with "Avatar:" most of the lead characters remain alive and well (bar Sigourney Weaver's, but it looks like she'll be back regardless), and the world of Pandora has only just had its surface scratched. And not long after the release of the first film, Cameron confirmed that his next directorial project would be to make "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3" back to back, with releases tentatively planned for 2014 and 2015.

As the box office continues to sag, and home video sales shrink more and more each year, when "Avatar" bounced into theaters kicking 3D in the pants as a new source of ticket revenue and with a healthy $3 billion worldwide box office haul, executives at Fox were overjoyed. They had a massive new franchise they could exploit for years to come (multiple DVD versions of the movies have already seen to that). In the fall of 2010, the studio optimistically announced that the inevitable sequels were being planned with "Avatar 2" to land in December 2014 and "Avatar 3" a year later on 2015. But it seems the calendar has been pushed back a bit.

It's said you should try to avoid meeting the people you admire, as they're bound to disappoint. Sigourney Weaver, however, put the lie on that entirely when we got to talk with her at the recent Marrakech International Film Festival, where she was serving as President of the short films jury. If her recent movie choices have been a bit mixed (for every "Rampart" there's an "Abduction") Weaver herself seems teflon-coated in that she can emerge from lesser films intact, and somehow any blame gets deflected onto the films themselves for not being able to capitalize properly on her particular brand of charisma. This erratic quality level has also, presumably, a lot to do with being an actress of a certain age who wants to work regularly, (and boy, does she work: 2011 saw her in 4 theatrical releases -- the aforementioned films plus "Paul" and "Cedar Rapids"); it's hardly controversial to suggest that Hollywood isn't exactly programmed for the sixtysomething actress, even someone as iconic as Weaver.
