James Cameron Avatar
Don't you dare call sequels cheap or creatively bankrupt, because Twentieth Century Fox chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos has something to say about it. He's head of the first studio to cross $3 billion worldwide this year, and that's certainly due to sequels like "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" and "X-Men: Days Of Future Past." For Gianopulos, sequels provide an opportunity to continue telling a story that audiences are already invested in.

That Sigourney Weaver would be returning for all three "Avatar" sequels is kind of old news, but the biggest question has been exactly how she'd be reprising her role considering her character died the first time out. But for a while now, James Cameron has been teasing that he may be messing with the timelines.

James Cameron
Filmmaker James Cameron crossed the $2 billion mark for a second time in 2009: his “Avatar” behemoth also went on to be become the highest grossing film of all time (right behind his “Titanic,” the second highest grossing film of all time, but to be fair it was only around $1.8 billion when it first came out and grew upon re-release). So you might think he’s lost a little momentum with his upcoming “Avatar” sequels, but it’s more likely that Cameron has nothing to prove these days and would rather get it right rather than rush into production (novel thinking in Hollywood these days).

James Cameron
So, James Cameron hit the interwebs for a Reddit AMA over the weekend, and he had a lot to say. We've already highlighted his comments about a proposed "Alien 5" and his thoughts on "Prometheus," but that was just the tip of the iceberg (yes, an obvious "Titanic" reference). Cameron had a lot more to say about no small shortage of topics, so let's just dive right in with the good stuff:

Avatar
It's officially official, though there was never any doubt: Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are back for the completely necessary sequels, "Avatar 2," "Avatar 3" and "Avatar 4." But lest you think this saga will end there, here's some news that perhaps suggests the franchise can live on beyond.

If you walked out of "Avatar" with the lingering thought of not only what happened to Jake Sully, but if he spawned a family and what their fates might be, then the sequels to the upcoming movie might be up your alley. For everyone else, the direction is a bit of a headscratcher.

Avatar Stephen Lang
Oh you thought Colonel Quaritch getting shot twice through the chest in "Avatar" meant he was dead? Guess again. James Cameron is gearing up his blue world sequels, and Stephen Lang is going to be part of all three of them. Yes, three. Which means four "Avatar" movies total. Bow down to the power of unobtanium.

There is probably no bigger cheerleader on the planet for 3D than James Cameron, but he's also been the loudest voice when it comes to half-hearted, unartistic use of the format. And he recently had a lot to say about 3D and moviemaking in general, sitting down with Alfonso Cuarón for a conversation at Mexico City’s technology forum TagDF on Wednesday. Why were they paired up? Well, it turns out Cameron lent Cuarón some technology assistance on his upcoming 3D space adventure "Gravity," a movie will undoubtedly meets his approval, 3D-wise. But as for some of the other blockbusters this summer? Not so much.

There are exactly 2,782,275,172 reasons that Fox is going ahead with "Avatar" sequels -- yes, that is monumental worldwide box office for James Cameron's smash hit film. A technological wonder upon release, and responsible for ushering the onslaught of 3D movies to the multiplex, there is sound financial reason for the studio to press onward. And certainly, with the film moving units on home video (where it has already cycled through a couple different releases), it suggests that audiences are willing to return to Pandora. While the studio had initially set "Avatar 2" for a December 2014 release, followed in 2015 by part three, last summer it was revealed that wasn't going to happen, with 2015 said to be the earliest that any of the sequels might surface. And one reason why? Cameron is still writing the thing(s).

Oh yeah, this is still happening. With Marvel, "Justice League" and "Star Wars" gobbling up the franchise headlines in recent weeks and months, it's easy to forget that another mega serires is just waiting around the corner, with James Cameron getting ready to expand his "Avatar" universe. Right now the plan is for two sequels that will likely shoot back-to-back, with the possibility of an "Avatar 4" prequel (though even if it does happen, it won't be part of the "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3" production"). And while "Avatar 2" was initially slated for a December 2014 release, that timeline was bumped back earlier this year, and now it seems we might have some idea of when it will arrive.
