Babylon
With an Oscar, two Best Picture nominations (one of which won), national hero status thanks to the Olympics and an acclaimed stage play in his recent past, Danny Boyle can do pretty much whatever he wants these days (even with the critical and commercial failure of "Trance" coming last year—though the film's underrated, in this writer's opinion). So it's a measure of the draw and cachet of the medium that his latest endeavor comes on the small screen, helming the pilot for new U.K. comedy-drama "Babylon," which aired on Channel 4 last night ahead of a full series later in the year.

As comic book movies are proving to be a big deal at the box office, it's no surprise that the television world is hoping to lure the same audience. Developing steadily over the past few months, Deadline reports that NBC has now found a director for their "Constantine" pilot: Neil Marshall.

Ranked in the top five of our 20 Most Anticipated TV Shows Of 2014, we could spend a long time explaining the various minor reasons why "Babylon" is one we're eagerly anticipating, but we'll just get to the point with two words: Danny Boyle. Yep, the filmmaker behind "Trainspotting," "127 Hours," "Slumdog Millionaire" and more is bringing his usually kinetic energy to the small screen, and we have to say, it looks fantastic.

Somehow, we're still getting think pieces on whether or not the movies are superior from TV, presumably from writers who haven't yet worked out that you're allowed to watch both. Ultimately, the movies can scratch itches that TV can't, and vice versa, and the two mediums can quite happily co-exist, even as the lines between them blur a little.

In case you forgot, last summer brought word that the "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Trainspotting" filmmaker was taking his talents to the small screen for the cop comedy/drama "Babylon," and now as we enter the New Year, the first look at the cast has arrived.

As Danny Boyle now makes his way to television, helming the cop show "Babylon" for Channel 4 in the U.K., it's not a surprise that some very strong talent is following him to the small screen. No matter what the format, Boyle is one whom people are eager to work with.

Though he got his start on the small screen, aside from a one-off 2001 project "Strumpet" and of course, the London Olympics, director Danny Boyle has mostly stay planted in the feature film world. But with "Trance" earning the least amount of money in theaters since his breakout film "Shallow Grave" (and obviously arriving with much bigger expectations and star power than that film), it looks like Boyle will head back to television for a project that will see him return to the setting of his biggest hit to date, "Slumdog Millionaire."
