This week sees the DVD and Blu-ray release of "Bachelorette" starring Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan and Rebel Wilson. This raunchy, unflinching, darkly comic indie was written and directed by Leslye Headland ("Terriers") and follows three best friends (Caplan, Fisher, Dunst) who are invited to act as bridesmaids at the wedding of a girl (Wilson) they called “Pigface” in high school.

As we transition into the unofficial start of autumn, the films take on a similarly seasonal tone, ranging from somber to bleak. Larceny, inebriation, lechery, and gore pepper this weekend’s releases, creating a veritable smorgasbord of tributes to deadly sinning. There’s also the odd comedy, sure, but even they seem to have dipped into the dark debauchery bucket for inspiration. But don’t fret too much, friends: if you’re starting to feel SADD, there’s always the IMAX/3D rerelease of your favorite childhood action flick to patron. Enjoy!

Produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions, "Bachelorette" is the movie for all those people that wished "Bridesmaids" was more like "The Hangover." Three bridesmaids embark on a non-stop parade of debauchery fueled by coke, booze, and pills that make "The Hangover" dudes seem kind of like pussies. Kirsten Dunst plays Queen Bee Regan, leader of the "B-Faces" (short for "bitch faces"), a group of high school friends now in their early '30s scattered across the country in various stages of their lives. This crew includes promiscuous cokehead Gena (Lizzy Caplan), spacey retail worker Katie (Isla Fisher) and Becky ("Bridesmaids" scene stealer Rebel Wilson), a girl who was known as "Pig Face" in high school.

As last year's smash hit "Bridesmaids" showed, girls can get just as rowdy as guys, and deliver big laughs and box office along the way. And while that film told the story of marriage and it's effect on friendship from the engagement right to the wedding day, it missed one key component of that whole arc. And that's where "Bachelorette" fits in.

While the first trailer for "Bachelorette" was amusing, it didn't seem to quite capture the spirit that has earned the girls-gone-bad comedy an R rating. But in case you wanted to know how foul things get, a new red band spot has dropped, and among the first things mentioned in the spot are blowjobs and cocaine. Getting our attention? Mission accomplished.

There's no doubt the "Bridesmaids" comparisons will be thrown around for this one, and certainly the success of that film likely helped this one get in front of cameras last summer, but there are some slight variations in "Bachelorette." While in Paul Feig's film the bachelorette party ultimately gets canceled, here it's the centerpiece of the entire movie. Moreover, "Bachelorette" looks like it could be substantially fun, and the cast is certainly nothing to sneeze at.

Improbably, Becky becomes the first of the group to get engaged, to one of NYC's most wealthy men, and this confuses Regan -- who works with sick kids, keeps a perfect figure, and does everything she thinks she should to be the first one to walk down the aisle -- to no end. She tries (with all the muscles in her face) to remain supportive as she receives the news, but it's painfully clear she is not happy about it.

In a world where studio movies often get release dates before they have a script, it's relatively easy to know what films to look forward to in the coming year. The indie world is a little trickier; films can often fly under the radar until they arrive on the festival circuit, without the wall-to-wall coverage of the tentpoles (although we do our best). But we're about ten days away from the Sundance Film Festival kicking off, and the indie line-up for 2012 will start to crystallize a little more.
