'Bad Teacher' TV Series Heads To CBS

It may not have grossed quite as much as “Bridesmaids,” but “Bad Teacher” was one of the films to ride on the wave of success of recent R-rated comedies despite being little more than mediocre (see also “Horrible Bosses”) and still earn over $200m at the global box office. Those numbers aren’t to be sniffed at, and as well as boosting the careers of many of those involved with the film there have been efforts to exploit the film itself further.

Weekend Box Office: 'Cars 2' Continues Pixar Formula, 'Green Lantern' Plummets

The numbers on “Cars 2” don’t actually matter, except for the stat-hounds regularly following the weekly box office noise (us!). “Cars 2” exists to facilitate Disney’s biggest merchandising cash cow, a multi-billion (annually!) property that needs no further justification. As Pixar seems like a studio that hopes to branch out into more ambitious directions (in theory), they will need something to keep the lights on when, and if, they should fail. Even if the reviews continue to be the worst ever received by a Pixar film, the “Cars” franchise will live on.

In Theaters: 'Cars 2' Races 'Bad Teacher' To The Finish Line

The box office arms race of 2011 continues this weekend, as we all recover from the sight of Ryan Reynolds' green CGI suit. This weekend, two contenders enter the ring. In one corner, we have the tried-and-true bread and butter, the consistent money maker, loaded with high end talent and a brand to back it up, not to mention merchandising out the wazoo-- yes, it's Pixar's "Cars 2." And in the other corner, we have the underdog, the newcomer with a loud-ass bark and still questionable bite, the promising but not yet proven genre, the raunchy lady comedy, "Bad Teacher." Two will enter, and one will exit with its tail between its legs, the shattered dreams of unproduced scripts fluttering sadly about its ankles. No pressure or anything, Cammie!

Interview: 'Bad Teacher' Director Jake Kasdan Says People Want To See Cameron Diaz Be Bad

Jake Kasdan -- the son of filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan -- has stepped into his own right as a director, and is a perennially underrated Hollywood player, easily drifting between big budget Hollywood fare like the underrated teen comedy "Orange County," smaller, darker stuff like the satirical "The TV Set" and his debut feature, the whip-smart detective film "Zero Effect." He has also worked frequently with comedy giant Judd Apatow, most notably on the beloved cult shows "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared," and of course, he directed the outrageous musical comedy "Walk Hard."

Review: 'Bad Teacher' Only Deserves A Mildly Passable Grade

After the critical and commercial success of "Bridesmaids," and an escalation in the discussion of women's place in comedy both in the more niche-y blogosphere and in mainstream popular culture (illuminated most wonderfully earlier this year in a gonzo episode of "30 Rock"), "Bad Teacher," about a foul-mouthed, irresponsible, self-centered, drug-addled teacher (who also happens to be a woman) seems particularly well-timed. And while the comedy is periodically laugh-out-loud, shoot-soda-out-of-your-nose funny, it also ultimately feels like a missed opportunity; like a substitute that breezes out of your life a semester too soon without ever making much of an impact.

'Bad Teacher' Director Jake Kasdan Circling Action-Comedy 'Family Getaway'

You probably didn't see "Zero Effect" when it was released way back in 1998. But you should have -- it's one of the most terminally underrated pictures of the last couple of decades, a fearsomely smart, funny, touching rejig of the Sherlock Holmes archetype, with a career best performance from Bill Pullman, and tremendous support from Ben Stiller, Kim Dickens and Ryan O'Neal. And writer-director Jake Kasdan made it when he was only 23.
