Disney sure picked the right time to get in on that Marvel action. After the first Marvel films proved to be decent-sized hits, the studio came in like a shark, swiping the studio up for a few billion, expecting similar results. Yet, not only has “The Avengers” handily outdrawn every other superhero film thus far, but it's number one at the domestic box-office for a third weekend running, with a $55 million haul, and is actually now Disney’s highest grossing film of all time. Take that, “Flubber”!

In Theaters: 'The Dictator' Overruns The 'Polisse,' So That 'Battleship' And 'What To Expect' May Cause Angry 'Hysteria' Among 'The Samaritan's

Dictators, hitmen, and navy officers – oh my! It’s a big weekend for the dudes, the professional advantages mentioned above notwithstanding, and we can expect screens clogged with manly men doing male things. Even the invention of a sex toy (by a man, duh) and male grooming get sweet turns in the theaters. If only the powerful sight of pregnant women was enough to combat the male-dominated market. Ah well, perhaps another weekend. Let’s jump into the testosterone-fueled fray, shall we?

Review: Waterlogged 'Battleship' Is A Cynical, Nonsensical & Boring Blockbuster

Expectations are a tricky thing with films. In an age where every teaser, trailer, teaser-for-a-trailer, poster and publicity still are pored over endlessly, many go into a film thinking they know what they'll think afterwards. This can lead to hopes being crushed, or sometimes, for a film that you'd previously dismissed turning out to be a pleasant surprise -- only last summer, we were dreading "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," only to discover that it was perhaps the best blockbuster of the season. Honestly, very little makes us happier than such a film: a picture that's been mis-marketed that turns out be an absolute treat, that is an entirely different beast to what you thought it was going to be.

'Battleship' Director Peter Berg Loses His Shit, Calls Israeli Reporter A Draft Dodger In Interview

“Battleship” helmer Peter Berg certainly has a personality we’d describe as brash, whether he’s spouting out ideas for sequels to “Hancock” or making an argument as to why his upcoming blockbuster has little to do with the board game it shares its namesake with, he’s a filmmaker who likes to have his opinions be heard away from the cinemas where his films are played. While “Battleship” has certainly received some flack for its overtly jingoistic approach to the military, we have to admit that being proud of those in the armed forces is all well and good, until you start forcing your stance on others.

While a good chunk of the world has already, uh, "experienced" Universal and Hasbro's "Battleship" the big question is, will it make any money domestically?

$200 million folly, or this summer's brainless "Transformers" programmer? We'll soon see, but if international audiences are any indication, no one reads reviews as "Battleship" has opened #1 in a number of territories, adding nearly $60 million to the war chest a full month before the waterlogged movie lands stateside. At the end of the day, people just want to see stuff explode as they're shoving greasy popcorn down their gullets. Or something. Anyway, until the movie says F6 at your local multiplex, a new clip has landed giving a look at a non-CGI sequence from the film.

While we still have to wait a bit for Peter Berg's watery explosion fest known as "Battleship," the board game movie actually starts opening up internationally next week and thanks to Japan and Russia, a few more peeks at the movie have made their way online.

This past weekend, two pricey fantasy epics hit movie screens in the form of Warner Bros.' swords-and-sandal sequel "Wrath Of The Titans" and Relativity's comic fairy tale "Mirror Mirror." And while their audiences were, in theory, different (with Tarsem's Snow White picture skewing much younger), neither fared as well as hoped, "Wrath of the Titans" ending up with barely half of the original film's opening weekend, around $35 million, while "Mirror Mirror" failed to clear the $20 million mark, despite the presence of Julia Roberts.

Then Why Is it Called 'Battleship'? Peter Berg Says The Movie Has "No Direct Correlation" With The Game

At this stage, it seems that rather than providing it the safety of an established brand name to lean on, the connection to Hasbro’s “Battleship” game is proving to be more of a hindrance than a help to Peter Berg’s upcoming blockbuster. While a film about "Transformers"-esque aliens attacking Earth with warships being our first and last line of defence may seem faintly ridiculous anyway, add into that equation that it’s based on a board game and audiences may be forgiven for writing it off as a load of old tosh before it makes it anywhere near theatres.

"Warning red, weapons tight...I want everything loaded," Liam Neeson gravely intones to a bunch of guys stranded in Alaskan wilderness to his crew. Why? Because a bunch of Transformers from space who are gonna create a huge debris field are coming to Earth in the latest trailer for "Battleship."
