One particular movie spot during the Super Bowl must have elicited a very specific reaction among the millions watching the big game: "Huh? They've made a movie of the board game 'Battleship?' And Rihanna's in it? How does that work?" We're yet to see exactly if and how it works, but what's clear at this point is that the film is no longer going to be the first in a whole string of Hasbro adaptations from Universal.

The greatest advertising opportunity of the year aka the Super Bowl, is over, and one highly priced team of players beat another highly priced team of players. But as always, it's the ads everyone is talking about anyway, and this year, Hollywood dropped a bunch of cash hoping to lure football lovers to theaters over the next few months.

Almost eighteen months ago, actor-turned-filmmaker Jon Favreau predicted that the summer of 2011 was "...going to be a bloodbath. There's never been a summer like this next summer. It's going to be bloody...There's not a weekend where there won't be teeth on the floor. The audience wins, but it's going to be rough for people making these movies. Then there was the big rush to 3D, so you have all of these people fighting for a limited number of screens and to get the 3D done, since most of these are hybrids or conversions, so this is a technology that is still in the relatively early stages and there's going to be a lot of blood pressures going up in the months ahead."

Oh yeah, "Battleship." We kind of forgot about this $200 million dollar board game adaptation (good lord), but it's just around the corner and the marketing campaign is going to start heading up soon for the film. A handful of outlets, including Movieline and The Hitlist were invited to the editing bay to chat with director Peter Berg about this upcoming film, and a few new images have come along for a ride as well. And yes, in case you forgot, this is the movie where Rihanna plays a Naval officer, but Berg reveals she brought the uh, "urban swagger" he was looking for in the movie.

Alexander Skarsgård Says His Dad Encouraged Him To Work With Lars Von Trier

While Lars von Trier might get himself into trouble with everybody else and may have ruffled the feathers of Björk, who swore off acting after starring in "Dancer In the Dark," the Danish auteur has a small stable of actors who continue to return to his films. The promise of working on a set that is unlike anything else they will ever experience is a lure and coupled with the director's ambitious and at times outrageous concepts, it's just too good to resist. But for rising star Alexander Skarsgård, he received firsthand knowledge from someone very close to him who is one of von Trier's most frequent collaborators.

The movie doesn't come out until next spring, so we're not sure why Universal is getting a behind-the-scenes look at "Battleship" out so early, or why they've chosen to do it when most people are on vacation and/or headed back to school. But their marketing department gets paid the big bucks to make these kinds of decisions so they probably know what they're doing, but it seems the first order of business is getting us to believe Rihanna is a woman in uniform in this movie.

Plus Glimpses Of 'Contraband,' 'The Raven' & 'Immortals'After a mixed summer ("Fast Five" and "Bridesmaids" performed well over expectations, "Cowboys and Aliens" well under them), it's interesting to see where Universal goEs from here, considering recent changes in management and all. They've got a fairly strong commercial line-up heading into the end of 2011 and the start of 2012, and gave punters a first look at many of those films in London's O2 arena as part of the Empire Big Screen event.
