Laggies Ben Gibbard
A little bit of related Sundance music news rolling in this afternoon. Two well-known modern musicians—one an indie-rocker, the other a now-seminal hip-hop artist—are plying their trades to some new films making their debut in Utah later this January. First up is Death Cab For Cutie frontman and ex-Mr. Zooey Deschanel, Ben Gibbard. The singer/songwriter's first foray into solo film scoring was for the 2006 documentary "Kurt Cobain About A Son" and now he's dipping his toe in the waters once more for Lynn Shelton's "Laggies."

Spike Jonze, Beasties
It's not the most well-traveled piece of "what could have been" pop culture lore, but in the mid 1990s, soon after their collective success with the now iconic and indelible "Sabotage" video, filmmaker Spike Jonze and the seminal hip-hop trio Beastie Boys, headed to Los Angeles to write a movie. The film of course, never came to pass. The director and musicians remained friends and continued to work together, but their collaborations became fewer as Jonze moved away from music videos into feature-length filmmaking and Beastie Boys albums became an infrequent event, where several years could pass between them.

A couple of weeks ago it was revealed that Spike Jonze had reteamed with the Beastie Boys for the first time in over a decade, directing the video for the Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 cut “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” featuring Santigold. Well, with previous efforts with the hip hop group resulting in the now classic videos for "Sabotage" and "Sure Shot," Jonze has once again created an inventive, hilarious and memorable clip for the band.

We might be a couple of years away from Spike Jonze's last feature, the tremendous "Where the Wild Things Are," with only the loosest of movements towards his next, a reunion with writer Charlie Kaufman, but the director hasn't been idle. He's helmed a terrific short film, "I'm Here," as well as collaborations with two of the best bands around, LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire, on "Drunk Girls" and "Scenes of the Suburbs." And now, it looks like the director's coming full circle, teaming up once again with one of the bands with whom he launched his music video directing career.
