Before Midnight
It's June, the long hazy days of summer are here and it's the perfect time to catch up with Celine and Jesse. The continental romance that started in "Before Sunrise," and grew in "Before Sunset" continues in "Before Midnight," the latest collaboration between stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, and director Richard Linklater. Its another winning entry in the series, a movie that we called a "challenging, funny, painful, very present and alive depiction of relationships at 40," "so honest and real that we wouldn't have it any other way." Now with the movie set expand to even more theaters, we have a prize to give away for some lucky readers.

There are plenty of traditions associated with Memorial Day: barbeques, the return of white pants, massive sales, and, of course, the release of long-awaited blockbuster flicks. We get two this weekend, both hailing from impressively resilient franchises. Plus, there's the highly anticipated next chapter in the "Before [insert time of day]" series. But maybe you're not a sequel person, in which case you can indulge in a 3D animated feature for the kiddies (in all of us), probing documentaries, dark comedies, and a biopic. Because what's more American than variety? Happy Memorial Day, cinephiles: let us know how you'll be celebrating at the theaters!

What happened at the cliffhanger ending of 2004's "Before Sunset?" Did Jesse (Ethan Hawke) manage to catch his flight back to the United States or did he and Celine (Julie Delpy) finally re-consummate their nine-year-after-the-fact romance? These questions are answered in Richard Linklater's trilogy-concluding "Before Midnight," a charming and funny, but much more emotionally difficult and pained picture than one might have imagined. Those expecting another swooningly romantic movie are going to be in for a rude awakening. While "Before Midnight" certainly has its appealing moments of allure and levity, it's ultimately more "This Is 40"-style pain with much more honesty and real bite than Judd Apatow would likely ever go for, and when "Before Midnight" bares its fangs and becomes uncomfortable there are few moments of comedic relief or a new jaunty scene to cut to.

Reuniting its leads Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy for a third entry, Richard Linklater's “Before Midnight” is by no means a simple cash grab, but a logical emotional step to its central romance. The film's couple have navigated their feelings from Vienna, Paris, and now Greece, and a new clip released shows their comfort with one another, but also their tiny annoyances.

The Playlist's 15 Most Anticipated Indies Of The Summer
So perhaps the blockbusting sturm und drang of “Iron Man 3” has you slavering for more KA-BLAMMO, in which case our Most Anticipated Summer Blockbusters is the article for you. If, however, you're already getting a slight tension headache at the prospect of weeks upon interminable weeks of tentpole releases and the din of clashing opinions that attends the redistribution of billions of dollars of wealth, never fear. The gods of counterprogramming have been especially kind this year, and there's a wide selection of upcoming, smaller-budgeted, lesser-distributed gems in which the only things that collide are intersecting lives, the only ticking time bombs are repressed emotions, the only things that break are hearts, and the only things that blow up are grandiose expectations, right in some sad sack's face. You are also much more likely to get some full-on nudity.
