Boyhood
It was just a couple of years ago, around the time of “Bernie," that we first ran our retrospective of the films of Richard Linklater. But in the brief period since, he’s made not one, but two films that feel like they, in fact, mark exactly the kind of caesura that should by rights have us looking back in assessment: Linklater’s last two titles deal in time passed and time passing and have slightly transformed the shape of his filmography, certainly bringing us to a newfound appreciation for his insight and intelligence, even though we were fans before.

Sundance Review: Love Is Hard In The Charming But Emotionally Challenging 'Before Midnight'

What happened at the cliffhanger ending of 2004's "Before Sunset?" Did Jesse (Ethan Hawke) manage to catch his flight back to the United States or did he and Celine (Julie Delpy) finally re-consummate their nine-year-after-the-fact romance? These questions are answered in Richard Linklater's trilogy-concluding "Before Midnight," a charming and funny, but much more emotionally difficult and pained picture than one might have imagined. Those expecting another swooningly romantic movie are going to be in for a rude awakening. While "Before Midnight" certainly has its appealing moments of allure and levity, it's ultimately more "This Is 40"-style pain with much more honesty and real bite than Judd Apatow would likely ever go for, and when "Before Midnight" bares its fangs and becomes uncomfortable there are few moments of comedic relief or a new jaunty scene to cut to.

One of the best and most unexpected diptychs in recent years is Richard Linklater's "Before Sunrise"/"Before Sunset." Unexpected because Linklater and his stars and co-writers, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, surely didn't conceive as the films as a trilogy, let alone a sequel. But organically, as each film grew in popularity and the characters resonated for the trio and audiences, they decided to naturally expand the story line. "Before Sunrise" arrived in 1995 and it wasn't until nine years later that the trio created the belated sequel, "Before Sunset."

Well, there's good news and bad news. We'll give you the latter first -- despite what looked like a lot of evidence to suggest that the much talked about follow-up to Richard Linklater's "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset" was now filming in Greece...it's not. However, it is being actively worked on, and while both Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy were spotted around Greece, it seems they are still putting ideas to paper.

When reports surfaced earlier this year that the long-awaited sequel to Richard Linklater's "Before Sunrise"/"Before Sunset" films would shoot this summer, many were surprised at the announcement. A collaboration between Linklater and actors Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, last we had all heard, the film was still in the conceptualizing/writing stage.
