With the New York Film Critics Circle set to announce their award winners tomorrow morning over Twitter (guys, way to make it less meaningless, how about an actual webpage?) and the Gotham Independent Film Awards just wrapped, the fall awards season has officially kicked off. And already, we've got some surprises.

Well folks, the first batch of nominees this awards season have been revealed, with the Gotham Independent Film Award nominations landing this morning, giving an early peek at what will likely be some strong contenders down the line. Bear in mind, the Gotham Awards have little bearing on the eventual Oscar nods with only last year's Best Feature winner "Winter's Bone" factoring into the proceedings at the Kodak Theater. However, it does represent a good chunk of what you might see at the Independent Spirit Awards later in the year and if anything, these nominations confirm that Fox Searchlight is going to have another banner year on the statue circuit.

Weekend Box Office: 'Cars 2' Continues Pixar Formula, 'Green Lantern' Plummets

The numbers on “Cars 2” don’t actually matter, except for the stat-hounds regularly following the weekly box office noise (us!). “Cars 2” exists to facilitate Disney’s biggest merchandising cash cow, a multi-billion (annually!) property that needs no further justification. As Pixar seems like a studio that hopes to branch out into more ambitious directions (in theory), they will need something to keep the lights on when, and if, they should fail. Even if the reviews continue to be the worst ever received by a Pixar film, the “Cars” franchise will live on.

Well, today is the first day of summer, more or less the midpoint of the year, and looking back over the the first six months of 2011, it’s definitely been a bit more of a scattershot movie year compared to the arthouse heavy start of 2010. We'll be honest, compiling this list wasn't exactly easy, the year has been uneven so far, but that said, it's certainly not without highlights: Terrence Malick finally delivered his long awaited film, Woody Allen flexed some of the old magic we love him for, and Michael Winterbottom found life and heart from a familiar comic pairing, while Joe Wright moved completely in a new, exciting direction. Over at the multiplex, big summer entertainment has already made that overpriced, greasy bag of popcorn worth the price with J.J. Abrams proving that genre thrills don't have to be empty, while one of the year’s best efforts unfolded beautifully on the small screen.

One of the purest delights of this year's South by Southwest Film Festival was stumbling into Mike Mills' "Beginners," not knowing anything about it (this writer hadn't even seen its artful trailer) and being blown away by its mix of humor, sadness, manageable meet-cute twee and romanticism.

What up, my mutants? It's time for another summer comic book tentpole! Matthew Vaughn's "X-Men: First Class" hits theaters with its stacked line up of stars. If 'splosions n' laser beams n' shape shifting aren't your thing, you are in luck, as not one but two charming indie dramas also start their roll out: "Submarine," the debut feature from Richard Ayoade, and Mike Mills' sophomore effort "Beginners." There's also a host of smaller projects on screens, so let's get started, shall we?

After spending much of the last decade in some of the worst theatrically-released movies around ("Cassandra's Dream?" "Stay?" "Incendiary?" "Deception?" "Amelia?" "Angels & Demons?"), Mike Mills' "Beginners" seems to be the start of a new phase of Ewan McGregor's career. Not only is the film terrific, one of the years' best (read our review here), but McGregor's great in it, the best he's been in years.

As big fans of music video veteran Mike Mills' debut feature "Thumbsucker," we've been keenly awaiting a sophomore film from the director ever since, and when that film, "Beginners," premiered at Toronto last year, the word was comfortingly strong. But even that didn't quite prepare us for the experience of actually seeing it -- when we caught up with it for ourselves at SXSW, it immediately became one of our favorite films of the year thus far; our review said "it makes you sigh and swoon in equal measure."
