If any of the major studios had the brass balls to take on "Behind The Candelabra," we think Michael Douglas probably would've been a no brainer as an Oscar contender, particularly judging by this new trailer unveiled over at The Guardian. It's a totally transformative performance and it looks like a total blast. While Douglas stuck with the project -- put on hold as he battled cancer and revived once he recovered -- and was open to all challenges the script brought with it, he did have his limits.

Behind The Candelabra
Serving as the gaudy, bejeweled finale to Steven Soderbergh’s film career (for now), Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra” cemented itself as one to watch from the minute the director announced it. A trailer finally dropped for the HBO production last month and blew us away, and now a new look from across the pond has offered several more reasons to get excited.

Cannes 2013, header
With the actual schedule released today (cue charts and diagrams as attendees try to work out how to be in eight places at one time), the final pieces are falling into place for this year's Cannes Film Festival, and it's shaping up to be a terrific couple of weeks. The initial lineup was already impressive, but the addition of a couple of titles we were surprised not to see in the original announcement has made the selection even more an embarrassment of riches. As such, we were hard pressed to pick a top ten, but finally settled on the following choices, that, along with the honorable mentions, we feel represent the strongest of what is a very solid lineup. It should be noted that there's a great showing by the U.S. in this selection, as there is for French-language movies, which is reflective of the festival overall. With Steven Spielberg the head of the Cannes Competition jury too, it feels like Franco-American relations are at an all-time high, cinematically speaking at least.

Behind The Candelabra, Matt Damon
The Cannes Film Festival is in less than two weeks, but if you're eager to see Steven Soderbergh's final film, "Behind The Candelabra," HBO has got you covered. While the movie will unspool on the Croisette in the official competition (and it's also getting a theatrical release in territories abroad as well, including France), by the end of the month, you'll be able to sit back and watch it yourself in the comfort of your own home. As an early gift, a generous peek behind the scenes has now arrived.

As Steven Soderbergh prepares to take what he now describes as an extended break from filmmaking, he's leaving us with one last piece of film work, the glitzy "Behind the Candelabra." Tracking the tragic relationship between Liberace and his young lover Scott Thorson, it's another challenge for the filmmaker, one that finds him again in distinct territory, allowing him to draw on cinematic and pop cultural history, while creating something new or interesting within that context.

Behind The Candelabra, Matt Damon
Yes, they are tenuously linked -- they will both be on TV very soon -- but only one of them is playing in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, so let's start there.

As usual, sifting the actual fact from the speculation when it comes to the line-up of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival has been a little tricky. We know the opener -- Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," the closer -- "Zulu," with Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom, and as of yesterday, the Un Certain Regard headliner, in the shape of Sofia Coppola's "Bling Ring."

Behind The Candelabra, Michael Douglas
Steven Soderbergh has never been one to resist a challenge (ie. a 12-hour adaptation of John Barth's "The Sot-Weed Factor"), and certainly, his long-developing biopic of Liberace, "Behind the Candelabra," faced its fair share of resistance. The director has been up front about major studios turning down the movie for being "too gay," but it seems it's going to be their loss. HBO has dropped a brand new trailer for the movie and it looks nothing short of great.

So Steven Soderbergh's final film -- the man still has plenty of non-movie stuff he's working on -- arrives in May on HBO, but don't let television tag fool you. "Behind The Candelabra" is still widely tipped to be included somewhere in the Cannes Film Festival lineup, and while the summer movie season has no shortage of exciting offerings, if the idea of Michael Douglas and Matt Damon playing lovers in a biopic of Liberace isn't enough to put this on the top of your must-see list, we don't know what to tell you. But perhaps this will change your mind.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" would open this year's Cannes Film Festival, still the most prestigious, and arguably most important event on the cinematic calendar. And today, March 14th, marks the last day on which films can be seen by the selection panel for the festival, which kicks off May 15th.
