Though streaming giant Netflix has the cable network in its crosshairs, it still has a long way to go before it reaches the heights and grandeur of HBO. The network stands above all else on the small screen when it comes to programming, though many rival networks are starting to catch up. Over the weekend two new trailers arrived for two of the network’s hotly anticipated premieres.

Steven Soderbergh is almost out the door. Last week we rolled out part one of our interview with the filmmaker about his impending retirement from cinema, his process of filmmaking, the "tyranny of narrative," and his upcoming directorial efforts on the stage (including reviving an old film project, "Cleopatra"). Today, we deliver our final part of our lengthy chat with the director focusing on his Scott Z. Burns-penned pharma-thriller-caper, "Side Effects."

Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh is winding down and this has been the case for a while now. His five-year plan meant retiring from filmmaking at the age of 50. Having just reached this touchstone earlier this month, Soderbergh is essentially done with the business of moviemaking. His final theatrical film, “Side Effects” starring Rooney Mara, Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones, is complete and his final, final film, “Behind The Candelabra,” is also complete and will air on HBO later this year following a likely premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. So what’s left? Aside from promoting these last two movies, he’s done… for now.

Steven Soderbergh Says 'Behind The Candelabra' Was Rejected By Hollywood Studios For Being "Too Gay"

This holiday season we have movies about slavery, the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, the travails of a mid-life crisis, the crumbling of small-town life in America and more, so you might think that, despite Hollywood's turn toward the blockbuster, there's still hope that compelling stories can get out into the marketplace no matter what the budget. Well, you would be wrong. Executives still want that magical four quadrant hit, something that can be branded, bring them prestige, make an attractive product for ancillary markets and/or all of the above. And as Steven Soderbergh shares, not even having two big names as stars could get him the money he needed for "Behind The Candelabra."

"It went incredibly well, I'm really proud of it. It's a wonderful movie," Matt Damon recently told us about Steven Soderbergh's final (for now) film, "Behind The Candelabra." And with the wheels in motion for a Cannes Film Festival premiere next May, HBO is beginning a slow roll of promotion.

Well, if you're gonna go out, might as well do it in a blaze of glory. Steven Soderbergh is in the midst of his final jaunt behind the camera, in production on the Liberace biopic "Behind The Candelabra," with Michael Douglas as the famed performer and Matt Damon as his young lover. But it appears he's got some big plans for this final picture, which may include one last walk down the red carpet in Cannes.

Steven Soderbergh's 'Behind The Candelabra' Will Feature Marvin Hamlisch's Final Score

While "Role Models" might be the unlikeliest place to find a reference to the late Marvin Hamlisch, it speaks to the songwriter/composer/arranger's reach and admirability that his name could be dropped into a bawdy R-rated comedy. And while that reference likely flew over the heads of most who were watching that movie, cinephiles know that Hamlisch's passing this week is a great loss. The man was behind the music for some of the most important films of the last few decades, including, yes, "The Sting," but also "Sophie's Choice," "Ordinary People," "The Spy Who Loved Me," "Same Time Next Year" and more. But it seems Hamlisch has one more gift for movie fans, and it's arriving in a unique package.

In a crudely poetic way, it's sort of fitting that ever curious, genre hopping Steven Soderbergh's final year behind the camera before he goes on hiatus would find him working on a male stripper pic ("Magic Mike"), a psychological thriller ("The Bitter Pill") and now, a biopic on one the most...flamboyant entertainers of all time, Liberace. And with the movie now shooting, someone has captured of snap of Matt Damon and Michael Douglas on set, in costume. And it is glorious.

Veteran character actor Edward James Olmos is set to join the cast of Baltasar Kormakur's "Two Guns." The film sees two of the biggest action stars Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington unite as two lawmen—a DEA agent and a NAVY Seal—who investigate each other as each have been tasked to steal mob money, with James to play Papi Greco, a Mexcian drug lord the two leads run into to. Scribe Blake Masters adapted the story from Steven Grant's graphic novel of the same name with Bill Paxton and Paula Patton also co-starring as a CIA operative and Washington's love interest, respectively.
