Great art challenges. Bad art flatters. But those of us who don’t dedicate our lives to film don’t always seek to be challenged. Sometimes we want to experience art at our leisure. One doesn’t schedule, or plan the impact of art (making a film review deceptive, as it can never be a critics’ final thoughts).

Weekend Box Office: 'Apes' Rise With Massive $54 Million, Audiences Rise Against Ryan Reynolds

“The Planet Of The Apes” saga is one of the healthier franchises in movie history. All the sequels occurred within a reasonable time frame, and while they were of varied quality, each one had their own separate reason to exist, and none were truly embarrassing. By comparison, the remake in 2001 was so far removed from the series’ original ethos that most won’t even acknowledge it as part of any continuity. Nevertheless, that atrocity opened to $68 million, which nears $100 million when adjusted for inflation. So while some may have been burned by the series thanks to Tim Burton, ten years might have been the appropriate time to reboot and still retain a base that remains aware of “The Planet of The Apes” as a sketchy form of “cinema history.”

What up, party peoples?! It's August y'all, the best time of year to seek solace from the heat in the cool climes of an air conditioned movie theater! I feel for those of you forced to choose "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" in order to bring your body temps down. I know, I'm being uncharitable but that's what I do. Pass judgment on works of art and commerce created by hundreds of people. I just don't care for those ape cartoons, okay? And raise your hand if a small part of you thinks this is a performance art piece by James Franco like the Oscars clearly were. If you're still jonesin' for Jason Bateman talking dirty after "Horrible Bosses," you can get a double dose with "The Change Up." Clearly though, the choice of the weekend belongs to "Bellflower," if you live in New York or LA, this festival hit has received a ton of buzz, in no small part due to the appearances made by the awesomely souped up vehicle, Medusa, at festivals, and the various drunken cricket eating contests that went along with it. It's also received rave notices, so do yourself a favor and check this one out this weekend, or soon when it hits a theater near you.

Fresh from a warm reception at Sundance, Evan Glodell’s “Bellflower” arrives as a turbo charged indictment of male adolescent fantasy and a biting critique of misplaced machismo. A burnt-out, bloody, brave debut, “Bellflower” rides out the fallout from a relationship to a stomach-churning conclusion…or does it? It’s a fine balancing act, as Glodell’s Woodrow charms the live wire Milly (Jessie Wiseman), loses her, and then rages – first impotently, then with the aid of a flamethrower and Medusa, a muscle car from hell.

One of the great things about watching films on the festival circuit is that reviewers get to see some crazy films. “Bellflower” was the strangest this writer has seen in a long time. It’s a film that will probably get a very small audience, but with a little cleaning-up, there’s an opportunity for it to find its place in the niche market.

It’s always exciting to see new voices emerge from film festivals, and you can add one more to the SXSW heap with “Bellflower” writer/director/star Evan Glodell. In “Bellflower,” Glodell and Tyler Dawson play Woodrow and Aiden, two Texas hipsters who believe they stand at the edge of the known world. In bits and pieces, their response is to piss and laugh drunkenly into the abyss. Mostly, it is to prepare for the apocalypse.

So Sundance is over. Weary buyers are returning home, harried critics are catching up on email and much-needed rest and the sleepy ski resort has finally been freed from the hordes until next year. But there are still a few more loose ends to tie up, including a few more acquisitions that were made as the festival headed to a close.
