In early 2010 we reported that writer/director Oren Moverman — who directed "The Messenger" and the upcoming police drama "Rampart" starring Woody Harrelson — was working on an adaptation of William S. Burroughs' "Queer" and staged a test-drive reading of the screenplay at the Sarasota Film Festival that spring. Evidently he was doing a solid for his friend Steve Buscemi (who cameos in both of Moverman's pictures) who would direct and produce the adaptation.

For One Oscar Qualifying Week & Will Reopen In Platform Release On January 27Largely known so far for straight to DVD/VOD fare ("Trespass," "Blitz" "Shadows and Lies" with James Franco) and some theatrical releases, (Chris Evans' "Puncture") Millennium Entertainment might seem, on the outside, like a strange fit for "Rampart," Oren Moverman's cop drama and follow-up to excellent 2009 film, “The Messenger.” But as the recent acquisition of Richard Linklater's black comedy, "Bernie" suggests, the company is in the middle of a rebranding strategy, and moving away from B-movie fare.

TIFF '11 Review: Fernando Meirelles' International Love Story '360' May Leave His Fans Heartbroken

In a photo studio in Vienna, a sleazy photographer (Johannes Krisch) is coaxing a young Slovakian woman Mirkha (Lucia Siposová) into posing for her first nude pictures. We soon find out this man is also a pimp and the pictures are for luring clients on the internet. Her younger sister Anna (Gabriela Marcinkova) tries to persuade her to reconsider but she has her mind made up. She needs the money and wants to change her life. Her sister intones through darkly humorous voiceover “If there’s a fork in the road, take it.” It’s a highly provocative opening for what ends up being just a so-so anthology of interweaving tales, even though director Fernando Meirelles ("City Of God," “The Constant Gardener”) assembles an international cast with interwoven stories spanning Vienna, Paris, London, Bratislava, Rio, Denver and Phoenix.

First Look: Woody Harrelson Proves NWA Had A Point In New Clips From 'Rampart'

Tonight is the world premiere of "Rampart," currently showing without a distributor at the Toronto International Film Festival. Anticipation is high for Oren Moverman's highly-anticipated follow-up to the excellent "The Messenger," and while Woody Harrelson nabbed a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for that role, three new clips courtesy of THR showcase Harrelson as the lead in what we figured was an intriguing ensemble piece. The film is a period piece that showcases the repercussions of the L.A. Riots on an embattled former Vietnam vet struggling with the responsibilities of the badge, and trying to balance his sanity and questionable on-the-job morals. Moverman's co-writer on the project, which is based on a true story, was none other than legendary crime novelist James Ellroy.

Is Ben Foster Part Of The Cast For Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus'?

Regardless of whether that plot synopsis from last night is legit or not (and Fox have denied it), we're more excited for "Prometheus," the sci-fi tale that seems to be set in the same universe as the "Alien" films, and that marks director Ridley Scott's first science fiction movie since "Blade Runner," than we thought we'd be, considering it started off as that most redundant of movie phenomenons, a prequel. Scott and writer Damon Lindelof have been talking a good talk about the originality of the film, and they've assembled quite the cast, with Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Guy Pearce and Logan Marshall-Green. And now it's being alleged that another top actor has joined the cast.

Review: ‘Mechanic’ Remake Is Exactly What You’d Expect From A Jason Statham Movie In January

"The Mechanic" is the prototypical early year action movie -- nothing more and nothing less. Star Jason Statham, who again plays an infallible, lethal bad-ass, seems to have carved his niche as the current go-to guy for B-movie action flicks. The beefy Brit once seemed like a promising heir to the ‘80s blockbuster action hero throne left vacant by Sly and Ah-nold, but with a few exceptions ("The Bank Job," "The Italian Job"), his filmography over the past decade compares more realistically to the likes of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal.
