3D Conversion Of 'The Last Emperor' Will Be Unveiled At Cannes

The insidious parasite that is 3D has not only infiltrated movies currently in production, but has wormed its way into movies already made and released. Way back in November of 2011, it was reported that cinematographer Vittorio Storaro was overseeing a 3D conversion of Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1987 epic “The Last Emperor.” Word has been quiet since then, but it looks like audiences will finally be seeing the results as organizers revealed that the movie will get a world premiere at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, playing in the Cannes’ Classics Series along with restored prints of Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s “Cleopatra” and Hal Ashby’s “The Last Detail.”

That Bernardo Bertolucci will go down as a cinematic legend is without question; the wheelchair-bound 73-year-old likely doesn't have too many films left in him, and while his enthusiasm and work ethic are an inspiration, we can't wholeheartedly endorse "Me And You." It's his first film in nine years, which is an event unto itself, and for those not down with explosions and spandex this summer, it's at least a reprieve from the artless noise of popcorn movies.

When you're one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, your life is likely to be thoroughly documented by others, and that's certainly the case for Akira Kurosawa. The director behind "Seven Samurai," "Rashomon," "Ran" and many, many more seminal works has been boxed, written about, discussed at and more, all at length, but his work is so rich and influential, there is always more to discover. And for those looking for a bit of a film class to start of their week, you can perhaps spend your lunch hour on this.

Cannes Review: 'Me And You' A Middling Return For Bernardo Bertolucci

It's been nine years since the last feature film from Bernardo Bertolucci, and for a moment there, it looked like "The Dreamers" would be the final effort from the currently wheelchair-bound filmmaker. And while we're glad he's re-energized and back to making movies, unfortunately, "Me And You" will be remembered as nothing more than a middling effort at best. A limp and lukewarm film about addiction and the relationships between parents and children, and brothers and sisters, Bertolucci's first entirely Italian-language film in a couple of decades doesn't build to anything of consequence, offering an insubstantial drama that mostly feels incomplete.

One film many expected to named as part of the lineup when the Cannes Film Festival unveiled their slate last week, was Bernardo Bertolucci's "Io e Te." An acclaimed, revered filmmaker who has been In Competition twice before (in 1981 for "Tragedy Of A Ridiculous Man" and 1996 with "Stealing Beauty") and received a lifetime achievement award from the fest last spring, he returns to Cannes, but this time Out Of Competition with "Io e Te." And now we have our first look at the film.

We're now entering the era of movie studios and producers finding new revenue streams simply by dusting off catalog titles, spit-shining them, and putting them back into theaters. Disney's hugely successful "The Lion King" re-release is still playing in some markets even with the film now out of the vault on BluRay. "Ghostbusters" re-visited theaters last month, and next year your eyeballs will be dazzled (sort of) by new 3D versions of "Titanic" and "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace." So far the arthouse hasn't gotten into the game aside from your standard new prints of classic films, but it looks like all that is about to change.

With everyone and their Mom rushing to 3D including old school dudes like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, for a moment there, it seemed like legendary director Bernardo Bertolucci was going to follow his colleagues over the proverbial cliff. Earlier this spring it was announced the filmmaker was going to be helming his new movie "Io e Te" in the format, marking his first time playing around in three dimensions. But with cameras set to roll soon, Bertolucci has not only made a 180 on that decision, he's got something to say about 3D as well.

Like it or not, 3D is here to stay and is no longer just the plaything of James Cameron or studios looking to beef up their bottom line on tentpole fare. Bonafide auteurs are now taking a hard look at the format too. Martin Scorsese is diving into stereoscopic shooting for his upcoming "Hugo Cabret"; Francis Ford Coppola's "Twixt Now And Sunrise" will have a 3D sequence; Takashi Miike goes to Cannes this year with his 3D "Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai"; Steven Soderbergh would have shot "Contagion" in 3D if the cameras were ready in time; Baz Luhrmann is strongly considering the format for "The Great Gatsby" and now, one of cinemas greatest legends will be embarking on his first three dimensional movie.
