Bette Midler Oscars
Another year has passed, and with it, some of the cinema's most beloved artists passed away. And so it goes, the Oscars took a moment to remember them all (except Alain Resnais) with the annual In Memoriam segment.

William Friedkin Mae West Bette Midler
After hearing Martin Scorsese recently talk about only having a few films left in him at the age of 71, it's heartening to see that 78-year-old William Friedkin is still going strong. The director will follow up his last film, “Killer Joe,” with a biopic on the late, great Mae West.

Looks like this is the film set to test your patience over the upcoming holiday season. Andy Fickman, whose credits include “She’s The Man,” “The Game Plan” and “Race to Witch Mountain,” directs “Parental Guidance,” which sees Billy Crystal and Bette Midler agreeing to look after their three grandchildren when the kids’ parents have to leave town. Hilarity inevitably ensues when their parenting methods clash with the current child-rearing culture, and when Billy Crystal just generally does his schtick.

It's going to be a tough decision for moviegoers who want to escape the family togetherness of Christmas Day for a few hours. They could either escape into the dusty, blood-splattered old west of Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" or they could face something even more horrifying: a Bette Midler/Billy Crystal comedy called "Parental Guidance." Based on the just-premiered trailer (courtesy of Yahoo), this could be absolute torture.

Director Andy Fickman isn’t known for his deft skills at directing comedy, as the Amanda Bynes vehicle “She’s the Man” and last year’s already forgotten “You Again” bear out, but his next film “Us & Them” (which, we suppose completes an unofficial trilogy of films with bland, pronoun-heavy titles) can’t be knocked for lacking talent. It already boasts Billy Crystal returning from the wilderness after “Analyze That,” and now, Variety reports that Bette Midler -- absent from our screens since the nonsensical remake of George Cukor’s “The Women” committed gynocide at the box-office in 2008 worse than Charlotte Gainsbourg in “Antichrist” -- and precocious “Just Go with It” and "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" star Bailee Madison have also joined the cast.

It's easy to forget these days what a big star Bette Midler was for a period of time. A Broadway and recording star who made her movie debut with thinly-veiled Janis Joplin biopic "The Rose," Midler had a series of successes in the 80s and 90s, up to 1996's surprise smash "The First Wives Club," but since then, her few film appearances have underwhelmed, with a whole generation knowing her principally for seasonal Disney favorite "Hocus Pocus" over anything else.

First revealed last year, this is one of those projects that seemed too good to be true and when word around it died as quickly as it arrived, we figured that it wasn't coming along. Guess we were (thankfully) wrong.
