Run
Just as that whole, weird Jay Z/Solange elevator dust up is clearing out of the tabloid food chain, it looks like the rapper and his wife Beyoncé have found a whole new way to weird us out. With the pair embarking shortly on a summer tour, they've dropped the trailer for the short film "Run" and we can't make heads or tails of this thing.

So yes, Blake Lively and Nicolas Winding Refn collaborated and the result was an ad for Gucci, which you saw a month ago. But if those thirty seconds weren't enough, a director's cut has dropped featuring a full extra minute for all your luxury fragrance advertising needs.

Okay, this isn't the full short film that will be unspooled at the Venice Film Festival in a few weeks, but it's a good taste of what's to come. Yes, Nicolas Winding Refn has directed an ad for the fragrance Gucci Premiere and yes, it stars Blake Lively.

Later, there will be a brief discussion of how literature is not film and how some actions and themes do not survive translation from the page to the big screen because our mind can better deal with envisioning them than it can with actually seeing them Before that, though I feel I have to pause and note that "Hick," adapting Andrea Portes' novel for the screen under the direction of Derick Martini ("Smiling Fish and Goat on Fire," "Lymelife"), is one of the most unclean and clammy films I've ever had to endure at a film festival. Not because it was incompetent and not because it deals with violent and sexual material but, rather, because it is both incompetent in general and even more incompetent specifically when it is concerned with violent and sexual material. We're supposed to be watching the cross-country adventures of 13-year-old Luli (Chloe Moretz, who clearly needs to fire both her management and her parents) as she sets out for Las Vegas and leaves her drunkard parents behind in Nebraska. What we get is a chronicle of physical abuse, drug abuse, murder and sexual assault all involving a minor, which then tries to lighten the mood with cutaways to Luli's sketches and a jaunty score with pedal steel guitar accents.

On the eve of the Toronto International Film Festival, clips have now been unveiled for two of the premiering films hoping to make an impact: Derick Martini's adaptation of Andrea Portes’ coming-of-age novel "Hick" and Marc Forster's take on the real-life story of a criminal-turned-do-gooder "Machine Gun Preacher."

Weekend Box Office: 'Cars 2' Continues Pixar Formula, 'Green Lantern' Plummets

The numbers on “Cars 2” don’t actually matter, except for the stat-hounds regularly following the weekly box office noise (us!). “Cars 2” exists to facilitate Disney’s biggest merchandising cash cow, a multi-billion (annually!) property that needs no further justification. As Pixar seems like a studio that hopes to branch out into more ambitious directions (in theory), they will need something to keep the lights on when, and if, they should fail. Even if the reviews continue to be the worst ever received by a Pixar film, the “Cars” franchise will live on.

Why are superhero and comic book movies so popular? It may be the comfort of believing there is a clear distinction between “good” and “bad” people, that “good” isn’t such an abstract notion within one’s identity and bad, in itself, is an unchanging, sometimes unstoppable force. There is poetry in this oversimplified view, both in the way it calms the troubled minds of moviegoers and the very notion of an unchanging duality forever at war, one side “morally” representing the winning side, the other not.
