Call it the power of nostalgia, and an indicator of just how much those plastic bricks are a part of popular culture. Everyone went to see Warner Bros. "The Lego Movie" this weekend, with the critically acclaimed animated film hauling in a massive $69 million, making it the best February opening since "Passion Of The Christ" a decade ago. And with huge buzz on the film, an A-grade CinemaScore and seemingly everyone falling head over heels for the flick, expect this one to stick around for a while. No wonder they are already working on a sequel.

Vampire Academy
“Vampire Academy” is the newest young adult adaptation that hopes to take the country by storm this upcoming Valentine’s Day. Directed by Mark Waters (“Mean Girls”) and scripted by Daniel Waters (“Heathers”), the tone of the latest trailer seems to suggest that the movie will at least try to have fun with its dopey premise which will hopefully set it apart from “The Mortal Instruments,” “Beautiful Creatures,” and the upcoming "Divergent.” Nevertheless, no young adult adaptation is complete without an accompanying soundtrack of “dark” and “edgy” pop music and “Vampire Academy” has given us just that.

We were going to go with the headline "Watch: First Teaser Trailer For 'Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters' Sucks...Blood" but that just seemed too obvious. Either way, it seems we're getting yet another tale of teens and vampires and powers all in the name of hopefully, maybe launching another franchise to lure those all-important tween dollars. But as we've seen from the roadside collateral of fare like "Beautiful Creatures" and "The Host," just being based on a best-selling book isn't always enough.

Fresh off her sci-fi adventure with Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko now plans on stepping into YA-franchise territory. “Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters” is the first of a six-novel series all written by Richelle Mead, and Kurylenko will play Kirova, the Academy’s head mistress. She joins a cast that so far includes Zoey Deutch ("Beautiful Creatures"), Australian newcomer Lucy Fry, and Russian star Danila Kozlovski. The Weinstein Company is distributing the movie, hoping the film series can be as successful as the novels, which altogether have sold over 8 million copies worldwide.

After a directorial change-up was announced in August with "Twilight" helmer Catherine Hardwicke being replaced by Wes Ball, the fate of the dystopian teen franchise "The Maze Runner" was unclear. But now, Fox has stamped a Valentine’s Day 2014 release for the as-of-yet unfilmed project, based on the first in author James Dashner’s sci-fi trilogy about adolescent boys trapped in an ever-changing maze. The premise never struck us as being particularly romantic in the way young adult fare generally is, but maybe there’s more to this maze than meets the eye. Or maybe Fox plans to stock this maze full of dreamy, steamy young bucks and lure the high school bachelorettes in.
