Tuxedos are being rented, red carpets shampooed and cleaned and the city of Toronto bracing itself as this year's Toronto International Film Festival is now just over a month away. And this morning, organizers have dropped the first wave of titles coming to Canada, and it looks like cinephiles will be in for a big treat this year.

Ever since the Cannes Film Festival, it has been equal doses of praise and controversy for the Palme d'Or winning, lesbian romance epic "Blue Is The Warmest Color." A movie we've called one of the best of the year so far, it has seen author Julie Maroh raise concerns about the graphic sex in the film, which she equated to porn, while some of the folks who worked on Abdellatif Kechiche's film claim they were bullied and the production was "anarchic" and over-budget. And yet through all of that no one can doubt the quality of the movie, but despite best efforts, one of the year's finest films won't get a chance at winning an Oscar. Ironic.

In the months following Cannes and its Palme D'Or shared by both director and lead actresses, director Abdellatif Kechiche's romance “Blue Is The Warmest Color” has weathered a host of controversial interjections, from allegations of crew exploitation to author Julie Maroh's opinions on the adaptation of her graphic novel. Still, talk of awards season love has never left the conversation (our review here), but now the film's French distributor has pointed to just the opposite result, at least in terms of Oscar gold.

Wow, wait, okay, what? It’s June? Right! So here we are again, rapidly approaching the midpoint of another year, and as is our custom, we’re taking a moment to pause and look back at 2013 so far, and to discuss, debate, and throw hissy fits over what we collectively consider the best films we’ve seen so far. As regards bigger releases, the year up to now has been, if we’re honest, a little so-so, with the blockbuster hopefuls ranging from the slightly disappointing to the outright dire (“Star Trek Into Darkness,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Pain & Gain,” “After Earth,” “Oblivion,” with “Iron Man 3” probably proving the best of the bunch to date). That said, in the smaller screens of your multiplex, and at the arthouse, a few gems have found their way through and there is a positive bevy of films we’ve been lucky enough to catch early, that are coming down the pike soon, that are so good they should drag up the base standard of the year by some margin.

While it's a more diverse celebration of film of all kinds, few could argue that Cannes hasn't provided a major launching pad for awards movies over the years. From "No Country For Old Men" and "Inglourious Basterds" to "The Artist," "Midnight In Paris," "Amour" and "Beasts Of The Southern Wild," barely a year passes without something popping up at Cannes which makes a big splash with the Oscars come the following February.

And so it's time to wrap up our time at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and gently put it to bed. The consensus that seemed to emerge, and that we're on board with, was that this was a strong year at the festival, and if there was no single, unexpected, left-of-field standout (no "Holy Motors" leapt out of the bushes and startled everyone) that was more than compensated for by the base standard being higher than in previous years.

The cinematic world may slowly shift back to something resembling normal after the onslaught of Cannes, but one film destined for continued debate is Abdellatif Kechiche’s “Blue is the Warmest Color.” The three-hour romance ended up taking home the Palme d’Or – shared amongst the director and the film’s stars, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux – but after the source material’s author labeled the adaptation “porn” due to it's graphic sex scenes, another fierce criticism has come from within, this time via the film’s crew.

It's just been a couple of days since Abdellatif Kechiche's "Blue Is The Warmest Color" (read our review here) walked away from Cannes with the Palme d'Or, with the prize being shared by the director and the film's stars, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux. But the semi-controversy around the film hasn't died down. In France, where gay marriage was recently signed into law, 'Warmest' only continues the fierce debate around the issue, and weighing in with her own opinion is the woman whose work without which the movie wouldn't exist: Julie Maroh.

With the red carpets rolled up, the champagne corked and every available bed now vacant in the south of France, the Croisette is now back to being a hub of the bustling beach resort at least until next May when the frenzy of the Cannes Film Festival descends again. Over the weekend, the prizes were handed out by Steven Spielberg's jury and history was made as director Abdellatif Kechiche and the two lead actresses Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux shared the Palme d'Or for very well-received relationship drama "Blue Is The Warmest Color" (read our rave review here). But it was just one of many films that got honored, including Asghar Farhadi's "The Past," the Coens' "Inside Llewyn Davis," Hirokazu Kore-Eda's "Like Father, Like Son" and many more titles including buzzed-about "Heli," "Blue Ruin," Jia Zhangke's "A Touch Of Sin," and more.

Ten days or so of the annual cinephile orgy that is the Cannes Film Festival draws to a close today, and Steven Spielberg and his jury have decided which movies were the best of heap on the Croisette. It was an interesting year at Cannes in 2013, with American films putting forth a strong showing in all categories, while auteurs ranging from Claire Denis to Jim Jarmusch to Roman Polanski and more all brought their latest works.
