Geez, it's been quite the topsy turvy week for the Bond franchise. Mere hours after names like Nicolas Winding Refn, Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, David Yates and Shane Black were tossed around as considerations for the director's chair of "Bond 24," Sam Mendes went ahead and re-upped for the job himself. It was a surprising turn of the events, especially given that the "Skyfall" helmer said back in the spring that the prospect of directing another Bond movie made him "physically ill." Well, it looks like he's found a cure.

The tantalizing possibilities: Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, David Yates, Shane Black, Nicolas Winding Refn were all evidently being considered for the next James Bond movie (though one manager for one filmmaker we won't name called the claim "funny"; Christopher Nolan's name also popped up.) But before we can even consider a "Bond 24" directed by one of these auteurs -- a 3D version from Lee, a NSFW one from Refn and a close-up obsessed iteration from Tom Hooper -- word comes down that the much-beloved Sam Mendes who directed "Skyfall" -- the highest grossing film in the Bond canon by a wide margin -- is now interested in taking the plunge once again.

There's rumors and then there's James Bond rumors, and lately they've been even more frenzied than usual. Mostly that's down to the news that "informal talks" have taken place between Christopher Nolan and producers to helm an upcoming entry in the franchise, and today brings more speculation from a couple different sources.

Wow. Christopher Nolan's made no secret over the years of his love of the James Bond franchise; he named it as an influence on his first two "Batman" movies, directly paid homage to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" in "Inception," and has often said that he's like to direct a film in the franchise at some point. But given that he's one of the few directors who could greenlight absolutely anything, we'd always wondered if it was something of a pie in the sky idea, despite his enthusiasm -- especially given that many, including Sam Mendes, talked about Nolan's influence on "Skyfall," the billion-dollar grossing last entry in the 007 series.

Somewhat shocking (to fans), but not completely surprising news this AM. Sam Mendes, the director of "Skyfall," the highest grossing -- by a large margin with $1.1 billion -- and arguably most popular James Bond film ever decided to pass and won't be directing "Bond 24." While the "American Beauty" director suggested in recent interviews he might take on the next installment -- something the Bond producers would have loved, we're sure -- he had flipped and flopped and it doesn't come as huge surprise Mendes moved on if you've paid attention to his creatively peripatetic career.

Even those with cooler feelings about the film itself have to acknowledge that Sam Mendes' Bond movie "Skyfall" was a wild success. With a BAFTA for Best British Film, five Oscar nominations (winning two), and a global box office of $1.1 billion, making it the seventh-biggest film of all time, and nearly twice as big as "Casino Royale," the most successful 007 film before that, few could argue that it's been anything other than a triumph.

With "Skyfall" having wrapped up its billion dollar run and now available on home video, it's time to start thinking about the next entry in the series. We have seen some movement in the past few months, with John Logan hired back to pen the script, for what was initially rumored to be back-to-back films (more on that in a second), with director Sam Mendes said to be helping develop the story. But it looks like his involvement won't just end there.
