New Behind-The-Scenes Clip Shows Tantalizing First Footage From Bong Joon-ho's Post-Apocalyptic 'Snowpiercer'

The summer movie season is nearly upon us, but one of the most hotly tipped summer movies (at least for film fans of a certain ilk) still doesn't have a release date in America: Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi extravaganza "Snowpiercer." The Weinstein Company bought the domestic rights to the movie, which concerns a train traversing a post-apocalyptic, snow-covered earth, and initially had planned to release it this summer, when the movie rolls out globally. But they haven't said much, so god only knows when it will wash up on American shores. Until then, a recently released behind-the-scenes clip (courtesy of The Film Stage) gives us our first look at "Snowpiercer" in motion.

So the 2013 Cannes lineup has finally been unveiled and as usual, there were a fair few surprise inclusions, a fair few snubby exclusions/category decisions, and some mildly oh!-inducing title changes. The majority of our firm predictions made it in (the Coens, Soderbergh, Farhadi, Sorrentino, Gray, Refn, Denis, Coppola among others) but sometimes into surprising sections, while a couple of films we had down as possibilities or longer shots paid off. So now that we know the lineup from G ('Gatsby' -- opening film) to Z ("Zulu" -- closing film) -- and it's a fairly U.S.-friendly list for Jury President Steven Spielberg to preside over -- lets dive right in and talk about the more eyebrow-raising moments from this morning's announcement.

At the grand old age of 72, nearly fifty years after his first screen appearance, John Hurt is seemingly busier than ever. The actor has no fewer than eleven credits from 2011, ranging from his snarling supporting turn in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and high-class work in "Melancholia" to short films and cameos in blockbusters like 'Harry Potter' and "Immortals." The actor has always pursued work with a diverse range of directors, and shows no sign of stopping there as he's just signed up for the latest film for one of the most acclaimed names in international cinema in the last few years.

'Before The Devil Knows You're Dead' Scribe Kelly Masterson To Rewrite Bong Joon-Ho's 'Snow Piercer'

Somewhat underrated at the time, it's sad that it took the death of Sidney Lumet last year to cause his final film, "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead," to be re-appreciated. A seedy little Greek tragedy of a crime movie, with impeccable performances across the board, and shot like it was made by a hungry twenty-something, it deserved to stand with anything else in the Lumet canon. And perhaps because the film was overshadowed by others on release, writer Kelly Masterson, who made his debut with the project, hasn't yet managed to follow it up, although he's had a number of projects in development, including the Tobey Maguire thriller "Good People," the Barry Levinson drama "Brother Jack" and "Stones," a potential AMC series produced by Scott Free, focusing on the diamond trade.

Even though he's now a bona-fide A-lister thanks to the success of "Captain America: The First Avenger," we're not sure people give Chris Evans enough credit. He's consistently been the best thing in crummy movies from "Fantastic Four" and "The Losers" to "London" and "Puncture," and when he gets the right material, like his raucous cameo in "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" or an impressive dramatic turn in Danny Boyle's "Sunshine," he really flies. Even his contribution to last summer's period superhero film seems to be undervalued; the film only half works, but that it works at all is in large part down to Evans' note-perfect performance in a difficult, near-saintly role.

While it's never been a better time for the crossover of Asian cinema to audiences on this side of the ocean, none have been quite as big as Bong Joon-ho's "The Host." The 2006 film became a sensation, not only smashing box office records at home in South Korea, but becoming a must see film stateside, breaking out of its genre niche and finding a larger audience than this kind of flick normally would. It seems that producers around the world all share the common trait of milking a hit movie for all it's worth, as not only is there a long gestating sequel to the movie still on the table, until that arrives, "The Host" has gotten a brand new 3D makeover.

While we're still waiting to see what Bong Joon-ho's next feature film will be after his excellent, Hitchock-ian effort "Mother," the director certainly hasn't been idle. Earlier this year, he made a trip up to Park City where he presided on the Sundance Film Festival jury and it seems he's knocked out work on a smaller project since then.
