You hold out hope because, well, that’s what you do (and maybe because you weren’t so down with chems). Maybe, maybe maybe, Paul Greengrass will make another Jason ‘Bourne’ movie and then Matt Damon—who has repeatedly said he will not make one without Greengrass—will be back on board, right? ‘Bourne’ producer Frank Marshall has even said his "dream" would be to have a ‘Bourne’ film that stars both Jeremy Renner and Damon.

Well, if there was any doubt about negotiations or deal points, squash them now: “Fast & Furious 6” helmer Justin Lin is 100% confirmed to direct the fifth and currently untitled installment in the ‘Bourne’ franchise.

Well, you gotta at least give credit where credit is due. With both Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon bouncing from the franchise after "The Bourne Ultimatum," Universal went to series guru Tony Gilroy to write and direct "The Bourne Legacy." And the result was a brainier, less frenetic, slightly more thoughtful approach. It didn't quite work. At least not with audiences who turned out to see Jeremy Renner as the newly controlled agent, but not quite in the numbers a franchise four movies in should expect. So now they're calling in the big guns.

Well, that was quick: just days after rumors circulated that director Paul Greengrass (who helmed the critically acclaimed blockbuster 'Bourne' installments "The Bourne Supremacy" and "Bourne Ultimatum") and original series star Matt Damon (who starred in the first three movies) were being courted by Universal for a return to the franchise, the director definitively shoots down the rumors. "It's a figment of someone's imagination," the director told Empire. At least Jeremy Renner can breathe easier.

While the box office and critical reception of Neill Blomkamp's “Elysium” wasn't stellar overall, you would think Matt Damon was doing some kind of course correction, so safe were his speculated choice of projects next. First, Ben Affleck's surprise casting news as Batman naturally resulted in calls for Damon as Robin, and then that idea moved alongside the possibility of Paul Greengrass and his “Bourne” franchise star reuniting for another sequel; Universal has so far denied the latter claim, and while Damon laughed recently at the notion of him as Robin, he did have some word of encouragement for his friend and former co-star.

The lesson here kids? Never say never. While Matt Damon has spent the last few years politely answering questions about returning to play Jason Bourne, he made one thing crystal clear: not without Paul Greengrass. With the British filmmaker busy making "Captain Phillips" and lining up other potential gigs, the possibility seemed a faint one for the forseeable future. But all of a sudden the wheels are in motion and it looks like Jason Bourne might be coming back in from the cold.

The Bourne Legacy
Get out the chems, and get ready to run as Aaron Cross is getting ready to kick some more ass. While the side-quel/spin-off "The Bourne Legacy" did solid if not exactly spectacular business (it's the lowest grosser in the franchise, but also did about the same numbers as Matt Damon's first time at bat in the series), it was enough for Universal to start considering a fifth film. In fact, not longer after it hit theaters the studio confirmed a sequel was in the works, and earlier this year it was said they were "actively working" on it. And today comes more firm word.
