Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper is nominated for a Best Supporting Oscar this year for his work on “American Hustle.” Sometime later this year, he should probably star in “American Sniper,” a project he’s spearheading as producer with Clint Eastwood directing, and there’s one more 'American' film to come.

Oscars: The Best Underrated Performances By The 2014 Acting Noms
With the Oscar nominations out, and the SAGs and Golden Globes a few weeks in the past, we're entering something of a quiet phase in awards season, with the Academy not even due to begin voting for a few weeks yet. So it seems like a good time to look back.

Gravity 12 Years A Slave
For a minute, it looked as if the race might be over. David O. Russell's "American Hustle" (and the way that that phrase rhymes alone makes us glad it's a Best Picture nominee) had the momentum going into the Oscar nominations last week, and had even more after it: ten nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and four acting nods, one in each category, only the second movie to achieve that feat in the last thirty years (Russell's previous film, "Silver Linings Playbook," being the other).

Okay, let's do the background stuff on this first. You might remember that at the beginning of the year, rumors swirled that Bradley Cooper would be taking the role of Lance Armstrong in a movie slated to be produced by J.J. Abrams. Cooper said he had "no idea" that such a project existed, though he did say he was interested in playing the disgraced cyclist. And well, that's certainly true as Cooper is now pedalling toward a rival project over at Warner Bros., though he isn't committed to play Armstrong just yet.

The culinary arts and filmmaking don't seem to go together that often. You get the occasional great picture set in the restaurant world -- "Big Night" and "Ratatouille" spring to mind -- but more often than not, you end up with films more like "No Reservations" when you try to put cooks on screen. But now, chefs are suddenly the new, uh, Snow White, with two big names gearing up rival foodie-related pictures, to the extent that legal issues may be brewing over their titles.

Talk about snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Only a few weeks back, things were looking grim for the much-buzzed-about western "Jane Got a Gun." The film, starring and produced by Natalie Portman, had a Black List-ed script and a top-notch cast, but a few weeks after Michael Fassbender left the project, director Lynne Ramsay bailed just as production was meant to get underway, with actor Jude Law, who was to play the villain, following hot on her heels.

Now that the long weekend's finally over, we're continuing right where we left off, with a look at some early highlights from this year's crop of Best Actor nominees.

A few months ago, word surfaced that freshly minted Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper was hoping to reteam with his director on the upcoming "The Place Beyond The Pines" (our favorite film of last year's TIFF), Derek Cianfrance, on a project known as "Chef." In development for years, the script by "Eastern Promises" writer Steven Knight, follows a drug-addled chef who moves his restaurant from Paris to London in order to capture a three-star Michelin rating and once upon a time, it was set to team the unlikely combination of director David Fincher and Keanu Reeves.

We may be stuck in the midst of the early winter slopfest that the studios are serving up, but help is on the way. One movie that is already on this writer's Best Of 2013 list is Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines," and as the spring release approaches, a batch of new images are here to give you taste of tattooed, Baby Daddy Ryan Gosling and the rest of the cast.

Harvey Weinstein has three big Oscar heavyweights debuting across the next few months, all of which he has high hopes for. We've now seen Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master," which hits theaters from next week, and it certainly seems to have the right stuff. Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" only wrapped about a month ago, and as such, we'd be very surprised if the film was ready to be seen all that much earlier than its December 25th release date. And in between is David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook," an offbeat romantic-comedy-drama that stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver and Chris Tucker.
