And lo, there was an 'Ice Age' franchise. “Ice Age: Continental Drift” looks like it will continue the winning tradition of animation studio Blue Sky’s crown jewel, opening at a decent $46 million. Despite the fact that the lead characters of this franchise should be extinct by now, this past-due series still managed to generate solid opening numbers despite a summer that has already seen openings from “Brave” and “Madagascar: Europe’s Most Wanted.”

Weekend Box Office: 'Ted' & 'Magic Mike' Smash Expectations, Dominate Box Office

Rareified air. This weekend's box office took cinematic money-making to a new high, with four movies registering eight-figure Fridays for the first time in history, leading to a bonanza that almost every studio enjoyed. Leading the way and outdoing all expectations was "Ted," the teddy bear-Marky Mark bromantic comedy that brought in a spectacular $54.1 million. It marks the third highest R-rated opening of all time behind "The Hangover Part II" and "Sex And The City."

Hello hello! We hope you’re in the mood for love, because it’s definitely in the popcorn-and-butter-infused theater air this weekend. From an attempt at arranged marriage to a relationship forged at the moment of the apocalypse to romance in Rome (perhaps the romance capital itself, if you don’t count Paris, and, anyway, Woody Allen’s already been there), there’s a wide range of love stories to choose from. And if you prefer vampire flicks, well then you’ll absolutely adore the monster movie take on American history that’s hitting the cinemas. Either way, sneak champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries past the ticket attendants and enjoy Valentine’s Day, Part Deux!

Once upon a time, you could just release a trailer and people were happy with it: a rare glimpse into a movie that was still weeks or months off. Nowadays, you can't just have one trailer, you have to several, some before the movie's even been made, plus endless TV spots and featurettes and clips and whatnot.

It feels like the summer movie season has been underway for some time already, given that last month saw the arrival of huge blockbuster "The Hunger Games," as well as "21 Jump Street," an R-rated comedy that's taken an enormously impressive $130 million. And that's even without mentioning those that hoped to be big box office stuff, but fell at the first: "John Carter," already taking its place among the annals of the great flops, and "Wrath Of The Titans," which has taken less than half what its predecessor made domestically.

With "The Hunger Games" now sitting pretty among the top twenty domestic grossers of all time (it's about to overtake "Jurassic Park"), the fallacy that wide audiences won't go to action-oriented films starring a female lead seems to have been disproven. And we're about to get more helpings of this combination, with "Prometheus" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" both looking to be among the biggest likely hits of the summer, and both led by women. And yet the doubters still prevail. While box office prognosticators sniffed in the past that films starring rats, wordless robots and an old man could be monster hits for Pixar, the studio's latest, "Brave," is being downgraded by many due it to being the first of the company's films led by a female character.

Disney's French YouTube channel (via Bleeding Cool) has debuted a new, minute-long featurette for their upcoming Disney/Pixar fairy tale "Brave." The piece seems to be part of a larger marketing scheme called "Brave Stories" that we'll probably see in America on the Disney Channel or ABC's Saturday morning programming (and, of course, online). Despite its brief running time, the featurette offers some new footage and some plot specifics.

Over at Entertainment Weekly, four new posters for Disney/Pixar's "Brave" have appeared, in anticipation of the film's fast-approaching June 22nd release. Additionally, director Mark Andrews, who infamously took over the project after the film's original co-writer/director Brenda Chapman was fired, offered commentary on the new posters, which feature selected characters from the off-kilter fairy tale, delivering tidbits of plot information that have yet to leak.

This past weekend, two pricey fantasy epics hit movie screens in the form of Warner Bros.' swords-and-sandal sequel "Wrath Of The Titans" and Relativity's comic fairy tale "Mirror Mirror." And while their audiences were, in theory, different (with Tarsem's Snow White picture skewing much younger), neither fared as well as hoped, "Wrath of the Titans" ending up with barely half of the original film's opening weekend, around $35 million, while "Mirror Mirror" failed to clear the $20 million mark, despite the presence of Julia Roberts.

Nope, you won't find Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Lightning McQueen or Mater (thank god) here. Pixar returns to cinemas in 2012 with "Brave," their first effort in three years that isn't a sequel, and they are putting a lot on the line. It's the first movie from the fabled animation studio to feature a female protagonist, and moreover it's a mystical period adventure which is always a hard sell no matter how old you are. But so far, it's looking pretty good and a new Japanese trailer (with a seemingly too literal English subtitles) serves up a lot more new footage from the film.
