For those bemoaning Pixar's unfortunate swing into sequel-dom with last year's "Toy Story 3," this year's "Cars 2" and the upcoming "Monsters University," the good news is they've got some original content in the pipeline. The studio just set a 2013 date for a mysterious new project, but before that, we'll get "Brave."

We're be decidedly un-enamored of Pixar's recent approach to their features: this year's "Cars 2" looks, if anything, worse than its predecessor, and being jammed between last year's "Toy Story 3" and 2013's "Monsters University," the studio, one of the true bastions of creativity in the industry, seems to be heading towards the sequel-happy approach of every other big company, with next year's "Brave" being the only confirmed original project on their slate (although we've got no doubt that there are plenty of other films in the works), and big name directors like Andrew Stanton and Brad Bird being wooed away to the live-action world for films like "John Carter" and "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol."

Ah, "Brave." Pixar's next film, after "Cars 2" (and their first non-sequel since 2009's "Up") and according to daintily-worded press releases their first "fairy tale," has had its difficulties – Brenda Chapman, a member of the coveted Pixar brain trust and the first female director to helm a feature at the studio, was fired from the movie after developing it for six years. (According to a Los Angeles Times article from yesterday, she is on a "leave of absence" from Pixar and describes her removal as being for "creative differences.") After Chapman left, an empowered Reese Witherspoon, unhappy with the shake-up and loyal to Chapman, also bailed, replaced by "No Country for Old Men's" Kelly Macdonald.

Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane Also In Voice CastConsidering the run the studio have been on recently ("Ratatouille," "Wall-E" and "Up" all in quick succession), it's a little sad that we're facing such a gap of original material from Pixar -- "Toy Story 3" came last year, and, much worse, "Cars 2" this year. But we're now heading toward the light at the end of the tunnel: 2012 will see "Brave," formerly known as "The Bear & The Bow," and shows the company once more moving into new territory -- with its first fairy tale, and its first female lead (the delay in the arrival of the latter being something that they've faced criticism for recently).

So with that in mind, a handful of films got pushed around over the past day or so.
