We are continually stunned by the speed at which the internet works. It's barely twelve hours since the (excellent) season premiere of the final run of "Breaking Bad" aired, and already we have a cartoon spin-off from the episode. Sort of. If you've seen the episode already (and sort-of-spoilers ahead, we guess, though it's your own fault for clicking through on this one), you'll know that one of the highlights saw the return of Jesse's layabout friends/associates Badger and Skinny Pete.

Tonight "Breaking Bad" returned for the first of its final eight episodes which will bring the highly acclaimed series to its conclusion. Though the show has been on hiatus since last September, if you're like me, you've spent the last couple of weeks re-immersing yourself in the show, revisiting the previous five seasons, watching extended Q&A's with the cast and creator Vince Gilligan, reading Internet theories (Walt won't survive the finale? Walt is wearing a wire? etc.) and think pieces (see: Matt Zoller Seitz's excellent essays for Vulture), puzzling through the upcoming episode titles for clues and wondering just how it will all wrap up on September 29th. Despite the torrential downpour of hype surrounding the return of the show, the stellar premiere episode "Blood Money" (directed by star Bryan Cranston) does not disappoint. Rewatching last September's mid-season finale "Gliding Over All" just beforehand proved to be a wise decision as many of the cliffhangers from the finale are resolved in the premiere.

Stream This: Prince Avalanche, To The Wonder, Magic Magic,
Hey there fellow streamers. The 2013 summer blockbuster season is (mercifully) winding down, and the Oscar rollouts haven't yet begun, leaving us in the typically unpredictable middle ground of autumn. But with video on demand continuing to gain ground as a distribution platform, the streaming services don't seem to have noticed, and keep on delivering cinematic nuggets for us to consume. It's a fairly modern slate this weekend, with two simultaneous theatrical-VOD releases on the American indie side, and a Chilean movie skipping the cinema altogether. Then, we have two relatively recent picks: one from a divisive yet enduring filmmaker and another that focuses on a divisive and enduring issue in US politics. And as another seminal television program moves into its last season, we urge you to (re)watch the follow up episodes to gear up for what is sure to be a spectacular final push. So let's get right to it: the best of streaming for the week.

There are many elements that have come together to make "Breaking Bad" not only one of the best shows on TV right now, but really of all time. From the fearless plotting, the breathless direction and the outstanding performances from the cast — Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Bob Odenkirk, Dean Norris, Anna Gunn and many more — all have come together in the kind of perfect storm you don't get too often. But not mentioned nearly often enough is the score by Dave Porter.

When Steven Soderbergh pitched the idea earlier this year that the final two episodes of "Breaking Bad" should be shown in theaters, fans collectively freaked at the suggestion. And while it remains to be seen if that happens, The Film Society of Lincoln Center recently made everyone want to move to New York City, as they hosted a week of free screenings of every episode of the show in the buildup to this weekend's premiere of the final half of season five. Even more, they rounded up all the principal players to participate in Q&As and panels. Couldn't make it? Well, here's the next best thing.

This Sunday sees the beginning of the end of an era. Because on Sunday, AMC will premiere the first of the final eight episodes of "Breaking Bad," which over the last five-and-a-bit years has firmly taken its place among the pantheon of TV drama, winning an ever-growing following, rave reviews and fistfuls of awards. For the uninitiated (and really, how many of there can you be now?) the series follows Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a high school chemistry teacher already struggling to make ends meet when he's diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. Desperate to provide for his family, he teams up with Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), a deadbeat former student, to cook crystal meth. Complications, as you might imagine, ensue.

After five years as one of the most acclaimed dramas on television, on August 11th "Breaking Bad" will return for the first in its final batch of eight episodes. To celebrate the occasion creator Vince Gilligan and the cast have been taking one last victory lap to connect with the fans who helped to keep the show on the air despite modest ratings. In NYC this week alone, Film Linc is doing a week long marathon of every season of the show (topped off with special cast Q&As for their favorite episodes), Gilligan sat for an extended Q&A at the Museum of the Moving Image (which has also just opened an exhibit of props and artifacts from the show titled "From Mr. Chips To Scarface: Walter White's Transformation In Breaking Bad" which will run through October) and Gilligan and some of the cast stopped by the Apple Store in Soho before Gilligan and the entire principal cast (Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Betsy Brandt, R.J. Mitte, Bob Odenkirk) landed at the Times Center last night for an extended conversation with NY Times columnist Dave Itzkoff.

So there's less than two weeks to go until the final season of "Breaking Bad" kicks off and every Monday at the office will be spent dissecting the final movements of Walter, Jesse and everyone else. Details have kept tightly under lock and key but pretty soon the show will be the only thing anyone can talk about. Perhaps speaking to the absurd levels of secrecy around the show, the first reviews, which have landed today, contain exactly zero plot points and read with something of a Kafkaesque obliqueness, so it winds up being a recap of the last season. But we'll get to that in a second...
